Description

The YMCA focus is to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or Head Swim Coach, and in accordance with the mission and policies of the YMCA, will contribute to the overall goals of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham. Provides a quality experience to members and guests focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Provides competitive swimming instructions to swim team members in various age groups. Organizes and conducts team workouts.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the Head Coach to develop and maintain a competitive youth swim program.

  • Direct and supervise swimmers.

  • Direct swim instruction that is tailored to the needs and abilities of individual swimmers.

  • Direct, instruct, model proper routines as they relate to work out and warm-up procedures; shallow water entries and racing starts; etc.

  • Provide direct supervision of swimmers at all times.

  • Effectively communicate and educate swimmers of risk factors in the sport.

  • Ensure fair practice and swim-meet experiences that relate to each athlete’s ability and experience.

  • Maintain safety around the pool deck at all times.

  • Remain alert and aware of potential hazards in and around practice and swim meet areas.

  • Present a professional appearance through your appropriate uniform, personal grooming, and attitude (positive and helpful).

  • Assist the Aquatics Director in implementing a comprehensive aquatics program that combines instruction/fitness/competitive segments of aquatics.

  • Agree to promote all YMCA aquatics programs.

  • Recruit swimmers for constant and continued team growth.

  • Perform any duties as assigned by the Head Swim Coach and/or Aquatics Director.

Team Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the self-esteem of your swimmers.

  • Provide the Head Coach with constructive input regarding customer feedback, suggestions for improved procedures, or other ideas/comments.

  • Be punctual for scheduled practices and swim meets.

  • Attend appointments and meetings as requested by the Head Coach and provide adequate notification to the Head Coach if late or absent.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

  • Work in a constant state of alertness.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, members, non-members, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Minimum one year teaching experience.
  • Coaching Certification: YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming & Diving and/or USA Swimming Certification.
  • Familiar with the philosophy and regulations of YMCA swimming and USA Swimming.
  • Must be able to relate and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  • Current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Attend in-service twice monthly during May - August and once monthly during September - April.
  • Successful completion of background screening.
  • Acquire and maintain the following certifications via prior to start date YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
  • First Aid/CPR /AED for the Professional Rescuer (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
  • Oxygen/EpiPen Certified (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
  • Requisite Redwoods Online Training Modules (completed prior to start date and repeated annually).

Physical Demands:

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Ability to be physically active to include, but not limited to lifting, bending, squatting, reaching, walking indoors/outdoors.
