Backcountry Information Specialists provide a positive first impression and top-quality public service in fulfilling the needs of visitors and guests to this AMC Destination. This includes providing accurate backcountry information, outdoor knowledge, backcountry skills, and assisting in search and rescue operations. Information staff also sell basic backcountry equipment, souvenirs, and supplies. Working in coordination with other AMC departments is essential to the success of this position. 

What you will be doing at AMC  

  • Welcome and assist Pinkham visitors and guests in a positive manner, responding to any problems or special requests with a professional demeanor. 

  • Actively promote and provide up to date information on the services and programs of the AMC while encouraging membership to support the Club’s public service mission. 

  • Provide accurate and knowledgeable information on a variety of topics such as outdoor safety, backcountry conditions, natural and cultural history, White Mountain National Forest opportunities and policies, backcountry supplies and equipment, and regional points of interest. 

  • Work with all staff to ensure quality presentation and delivery of a wide variety of programming including Breakfast Talks, Dinner Talks, interpretive programs, and evening programs while highlighting Pinkham opportunities, AMC programs, and our mission. 

  • Promote, sell, and use retail items as a means of supporting the AMC’s public service efforts. Cash accountability, stocking retail items, and assisting in inventory procedures are required. Staff must enhance visitor’s National Forest experience in all interactions through their personal knowledge, skill and experience. 

  • Assist in the response to search and rescue incidents using established procedures and protocols with our partners: the NH Fish and Game Department and the US Forest Service. Provide communication, transportation and other resources needed to respond to backcountry emergencies. Accurately complete required post incident paperwork. 

  • Safely respond to alarm, medical, weather, illegal activity, or other emergencies by calling 911, or contacting the appropriate authority, while providing security for our guests, visitors, and employees. 

  • Provide guidance and support for front-line volunteers to ensure the highest standards of service and productivity. 

  • Assist in the maintenance of the center’s appearance including informational racks, resources at the main desk, and associated areas and kiosks. Assist the custodial staff in cleaning windows, vacuuming, snow removal, restroom patrol, and parking lot upkeep as needed or requested. 

  • Attend trainings, meetings, and complete special projects as assigned by the supervisor. 

What AMC is looking for

  • Attention to detail
  • Backcountry experience and exceptional customer service skills within a team-oriented environment.
  • Prior visitor center, retail experience, and interpretive program delivery experience are desirable
  • Familiarity with the White Mountain National Forest, a proactive attitude regarding AMC programs and mission and wilderness medical certification are strongly preferred
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • The Visitor Services Crew Leader is a critical component to the success of AMC’s visitor services
  • Physical requirements include the ability to stand for up to 8 hours behind the desk, utilizing stairs to upper offices and basement restrooms and supply rooms
  • Ability to operate standard office and radio equipment, to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, and to occasionally travel safely on backcountry trails in all weather conditions.

Salary Range:  $13.39/hour 

 

We are committed to equitable compensation practices, and we encourage qualified candidates to apply.  The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow withing the organization  External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range.  The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, skills and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
