Position Overview

The Development Specialist is a member of the Institutional Advancement Unit, which manages all revenue generation across Equal Justice Works. The Specialist will support the efforts of the Institutional Advancement Unit and the Executive Office by providing data-driven intelligence and analytics to inform organizational development strategies, goals and execution.


The Specialist will utilize the Equal Justice Works Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System and external sources to help build, maintain, and evaluate an integrated fundraising program that increases giving from current and prospective donors. The position plays an integral role in the identification, qualification and research of major gift prospects, individuals, corporations, and foundations, and has responsibility for prospect research and reporting on fundraising initiatives.



  • Perform research to identify, qualify, and quantify prospect pools and pipelines through the use of screening, data mining, and statistical analysis of existing/potential donors.
  • Serve as the lead member of the team that prepares research profiles on prospects and donors to ensure successful stewardship and cultivation.
  • Track overall trends and patterns in giving among donor segments and make recommendations to positively influence fundraising strategies and activities.
  • Identify major and principal gift and grant prospects with a focus on assessing capacity and connections to the Equal Justice Works network.
  • Work closely with the Data Services Specialist to ensure the Customer Relations Management (CRM) System is structured and maintained in a manner that is conducive to performing, generating, and tracking prospect research.
  • Support foundation fundraising by conducting prospect/donor research; building/ updating campaign trackers; assisting with the preparation of grant applications and reports; and, helping maintain the schedule of grant proposal and reporting deadlines.
  • Coordinate efforts with Finance and Program units to ensure accurate and timely internal processes and information sharing.
  • Participate in events (e.g. fall events) and projects as deemed necessary to support the broader goals of the Organization.
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices and developments in research resources, technologies, and methodologies.

Job Qualifications

Education & Experience  

  • BA/BS degree required. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience required as a Development Specialist or similar role.
  • Hands on experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and writing.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.


  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research systems, biographical and financial reference sources and ability to gather information effectively from a variety of resources. 

  •  Demonstrated skill in gathering data, analyzing information, compiling, writing, synthesizing and presenting reports to inform fundraising strategies. 

  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate data and information in a clear and understandable manner. 

  • Experience working with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems such as Microsoft CRM, Blackbaud Raiser's Edge or SalesForce. 

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel. 

  • Commitment to handle confidential donor information sensitively. 

  • Strong organizational skills. 


Temporarily remote, however, typical daily activities are conducted in a typical office environment.
