POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Basic Function

The Independent Living Specialist is responsible for teaching independent living & employment skills to blind and/or visually-impaired individuals of all ages. This position works as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide services to blind and visually-impaired individuals in the following areas: communication, activities of daily living, vocational readiness, and psychosocial aspects of blindness and vision loss.

The Independent Living Specialist will establish effective working relationships with area eye medical professionals, public and private agencies, civic groups and others to obtain referrals of new individuals and to enlist cooperation in providing services.

Job Duties

  • Performs baseline assessments to determine training goals
  • Develops instructional plans & learning objectives to help clients obtain proficiency and confidence in recommended areas.
  • Develops checklists to track mastery of skills in each discipline.
  • Determines specific learning styles, strengths, and limitations and develops or adapts teaching strategies and materials to address individual learning styles
  • Establishes trust and rapport with individuals
  • Facilitates support groups related to adjustment to blindness
  • Assists the learner to develop a self-advocating strategy and support network
  • Evaluates progress and recommends strategies for continued learning and support
  • Promotes the Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth in the community in an effort to grow the Client Services department in the number of persons served and the scope of services provided
  • Documents services provided and individual progress
  • Ensures confidentiality of all case records
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Fluent in braille; reading and writing uncontracted and contracted
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation training techniques for blind and visually-impaired individuals
  • Knowledge of assistive aids, tools & technology and equipment used to enhance independence
  • Knowledge of community referral sources for blind and visually-impaired individuals
  • Ability to teach independent living skills
  • Ability to effectively teach and lead braille classes to all ages
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain case records
  • Ability to use a database case management program for progress documentation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point)
  • Skilled in training on some assistive technology devices to include CCTVs & smart phones.
  • Ability to safely drive and operate a 32 recreational vehicle a plus
  • Ability to provide training effectively in a virtual platform

 

Experience

  • One year experience training and /or working directly with individuals who are blind or significantly visually impaired.

 

Education/Training /Certifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Rehabilitation Services or related area such as education, special education, or rehabilitation counseling
  • Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist from Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals a plus

 

Salary

  • Commensurate with experience.

Transportation

  • The Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth does not provide a company vehicle or pay for a personal driver for any position. We do, however, compensate mileage, according to Federal IRS rates. Access to reliable transportation required

 

Work Schedule

  • Monday Thursday (7:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m.) with occasional events outside normal work-week hours as needed to meet company objectives.
