The Arc Central Chesapeake Region will be offering on-site hiring events throughout the fall/winter, for people that are interested in a career as a Direct Support Professional. Direct Support Professionals play a vital role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in suburban or rural communities. The primary responsibility of a Direct Support Professional is to facilitate and promote independence, self-advocacy, and decision making among the individuals they support. By assisting with personal care, promoting community inclusion, and fostering a clean and healthful living environment, a Direct Support Professional enables individuals to make life choices and build meaningful relationships.

The role involves various responsibilities and functions, including but not limited to:

Essential Functions

  • Provide support with daily living activities at home and in the community, such as meal preparation, personal care, and maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.

  • Provide services outlined in the Person-Centered Plan each person we support, ensuring goals are developed, implemented and progress benchmarks are being met.

  • Administer medication as a trained Certified Medication Technician through the Maryland Board of Nursing and under the direction of an agency Delegating Nurse.

  • Monitor and report any concerns regarding an individual’s living conditions; ensure Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and OHCQ regulations are met for all home environments.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required, with at least one year of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.

  • Must have a valid Maryland Driver's License with no egregious violations.

  • Self-motivation, creativity, and innovation in providing supports that promote independence, choice, and self-determination.

  • Ability to be a team player, respond to changes and crises calmly and productively, and work autonomously with little direction, offering solutions-oriented approaches.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide support respectfully, addressing the diverse needs of individuals served.

  • Comfort with using technology, including email and documenting outcomes/information in relevant systems (e.g., iCM).

  • Completion of all required The Arc and DDA trainings.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 75 pounds in supporting people with activities of daily living. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to drive is a requirement of the position.
