Position Title: Graduate Assistant - Career & Professionalism Center

Supervisor's Title & Department: Executive Director of Career Development

Session: Academic (August 12, 2024 - May 16, 2025) This is a one-year placement with an opportunity for re-application and hire.

Hourly Rate & Leadership Classification: $17.00

Average hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week

 

Job Purpose: The graduate assistant provides direct service support to the Career & Professionalism Center through individual work with staff and program support through ongoing career counseling, internal marketing, marketing of programs, and web page content updates and development especially as related to student outcomes. Oversee the marketing of the online job bank, recruiting system, and career management system, events and other programs especially through social media. Assist with workshops, GS 105 and 305 classes, events, and resume critiques. In addition, the graduate assistant will conduct research on various issues related to career development, internships, employer relations, job search and assessment as well as participate in professional development activities, and assist with the data required for assessment of the center and its programs.

Essential Duties:

  • Facilitate workshops on career-related topics

    • Focus 2 (Career Assessment Tool)

    • Applying to Graduate School

    • Resume Writing

    • Internships

    • Social Media Presence

  • Monitor and respond to emails within the office delegated email

  • Complete administrative Handshake tasks

  • Enter and analyze office data at the end of the semester for final reports

  • Assist with marketing the Center's services & programs

    • Create social media content each week, schedule posts via Content Cal, and submit for review

    • Create flyers or other marketing materials sent out to students/faculty/staff/employers

    • Send out emails to students/faculty/staff about upcoming events

  • Providing career counseling

    • Meet with underclassmen (Freshmen & Sophomores) about choosing a major and career

  • Take professional headshots and edit them for students, faculty, and staff

  • Provide advice on job/internship searches to students

  • Review resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, etc. for students (Freshman & sophomores)

  • Provide support at Career Center events (taking attendance, monitoring the Google Meet (if hybrid event))

  • Update the Center's web page content through communication with MARCOM via the online page update submission form

  • Collaborate with student workers to complete office projects (e.g., prepping for major events such as fairs, cleaning, decorating for holidays, etc).

  • Assist students, faculty, & staff who come to our office (answer questions)

  • Collaborate with Career & Internship Counselor on the Student Worker Mentorship Program

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree and enrollment in University of Lynchburg’s master's degree program (Non-Profit Leadership, MBA or Counselor Education). Undergraduate or postgraduate experience in assessment, marketing, social media, and technology is desirable.

Special Oral/Written Skills: Excellent human relation and English-language oral skills. Effective communication and relationship-building skills. Excellent English-language reading comprehension and writing skills. Ability to proof-read and edit copy. Good mathematical and analysis skills. Ability to work with a diverse population.
