The Fessenden School is an all boys independent day and boarding school serving 525 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 9th Grade in West Newton, MA.  The Fessenden School’s mission is to cultivate each boy’s talents and develop in balance his character, mind, and body in an inclusive and joyful community.  For more than 100 years, The Fessenden School has offered state-of-the-art facilities, curriculum, and programs specifically designed to meet the educational needs of boys.

Position Summary

The Fessenden School offers two, one-year teaching paid internships in order to enrich the educational experience for our students and provide individuals interested in pursuing teaching careers in independent schools with practical, hands-on experience. Lower School interns are typically assigned to a classroom teacher as their mentor.   

 

Schedule

  • Orientation August 23 & 24, 2021 
  • School year August 30, 2021 to June 14, 2022 
  • Weekly Academic Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm
  • Residential Schedule may apply: 2 evenings and alternate weekends

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Live on campus as a non-dorm or dorm person (preferred) or live off campus
  • Observe fellow teachers in various subject and divisions

  • Substitute teach in various classrooms and divisions

  • Meet weekly with the Intern Coordinators

  • Teach and stay current with curriculum and 21st century learning

  • Incorporate project based learning, educational technology, differentiated learning and cultural competency in lessons

  • Exemplify the School’s mission and community principles, including honesty, respect and compassion 

  • Participate in and help facilitate all division and grade level activities and meetings

  • Coach a sport(s); supervise sports study hall; work in the Lower School Extended Day program as assigned

  • Collaborate with colleagues within grade level, division, department and student support services, including the Learning Resources Department

  • Perform duties such as supervising drop off and dismissal, recess, lunch; being a homeroom teacher and/or advisor, grade team member, student club facilitator: leading/assisting with fall orientation, grade trips, overnight grade trips and events

  • Assist with student transportation as assigned

  • Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and students

  • Utilize Google Sites to create and maintain a teaching portfolio including all aspects of the intern experience 

  • Attend faculty meetings typically on Monday afternoon

  • Attend professional development meetings; three full day and three in the afternoon 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance

  • Maintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention training

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience in instructing children in an academic, athletic or camp programs

  • Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control a classroom

  • Ability to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization and problem solving with minimal supervision

  • Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students and parents

  • Can employ a growth mindset in order maximize the experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, justice, diversity and equity

  • A commitment to boys and boys’ education

  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive a fourteen passenger van

  • Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear

  • Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment, and the noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
