The Receiving Specialist (RS) is responsible for the efficient and accurate flow of inbound product from arrival of delivery truck through to the sales floor. The RS will have a significant impact on the customer experience by partnering with department peers to ensure an efficient flow of merchandise to the appropriate selling space in a timely manner and ensuring accurate on-hand inventory in the operating system. Effective organization and efficiency of the stockroom, seasonal task prioritization as well as leading seasonal Inventory associates in the receiving process including both live goods and hard goods are also key responsibilities.



  • Ensure inventory accuracy and timely shipment of multi-store inventory received at a single location
  • Participate in and lead the receiving process on a day to day basis including all live goods and hard goods shipments. In conjunction with the Retail Division Buyer (RDB), support training and direction of seasonal live goods and hard goods receivers in the height of the season
  • In partnership with RDB and Store Manager (SM) prioritize and set daily task list for seasonal inventory associates in both live and hard goods receiving areas
  • Responsible for organizing and maintaining a clean, neat, safe and efficient stockroom and back stock including storage containers and outside inventory storage areas
  • Act as the point person for all inventory flow issues and processes
  • Act as a store specific resource for the buying team related to vouchering, invoicing and cycle count issues as assigned by the GCS
  • In cooperation with the buying team and SM, initiate and complete cycle counts in various product areas as assigned
  • Production and placement of accurate price tags as well as identifying products as candidates for shelf tag merchandising (no sticker, sign only) to reduce cost and workload
  • Responsible for timely and accurate receiving of all applicable inbound and outbound freight
  • Assist Buying team in vouchering process including direct vouchering, problem solving and vendor contact as necessary
  • Assisting buying team in completing, processing and filing of all related receiving documentation as needed
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely documentation (in partnership with buying team) of inventory transactions including receiving, transfers to Outlet, transfers to other stores, returns to GSC warehouse and non-GSC vendors
  • Identify and act on opportunities to streamline product flow including process improvements, organization, communication, warehouse safety, training etc.
  • Ongoing communication and partnership with members of the retail team in all aspects of inventory control and product flow including direct communication with seasonal warehouse help and staff at satellite locations
  • In partnership with department leads, ensure consistent and prompt flow of all product from delivery vehicle to selling area
  • Act as liaison and point person for inbound and return shipments to AGR warehouse, other stores and freight companies
  • Provide ongoing feedback to buying team to improve purchasing, reduce out of stocks, ensure adequate stock for merchandising plans and react to hot sellers
  • POS and sales floor coverage as needed and assigned
  • Assist in purchasing processes as needed including vendor contact, return authorizations, claims and special orders as assigned
  • Be present and punctual for all assigned shifts, work a flexible schedule when needed, including evenings, holidays and weekends
  • Seasonal overtime may be required



  • 2 years inventory related experience required
  • 2 years direct customer service experience preferred
  • POS and inventory management system experience required
  • Advanced gardening/ horticultural knowledge required 2 years experience in horticultural industry preferred
  • Ability to use internet search engine, e-mail, Microsoft Word required
  • Microsoft excel skills required
  • Strong Organizational skills required
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Basic knowledge of gardening products
  • Ability to stay organized, focused and calm in a fast-paced environment
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read, and interpret common scientific and technical information.
  • Knowledge or horticultural terminology, plant disease & insects preferred
  • Ability to learn in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally, 40 lbs regularly
  • Must be available to work weekends
  • This position is required to work outside in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, wet weather
  • This position requires significant time working with, in, on and around heavy equipment
  • This position involves significant physical activity including bending, lifting large and bulky material, working above the shoulders and below the knees with regularity
