Description

General Statement: The Classroom Assistant supports the Fleet Mission Statement and Visitor Experience Philosophy by supporting educational programming designed for school groups and public audiences. This position will assist in providing hands-on, inquiry based educational programming and provide support for offsite Camps in Chula Vista and San Diego. Position reports to Youth Engagement Manager and School Programs Manager.

This is a seasonal position supporting our Summer 2024 Educational Programs

Summer Camp Training Dates: May 28-31, 2024
Summer Camp Dates: Tuesday, June 20-Friday, August 18, 2024
Summer Camp Hours: 25-30 Hours per Week

Reports To: Education Managers

Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:

  • Provide exemplary customer service: handle questions, comments and/or complaints regarding education programs and events professionally and tactfully.
  • Maintain timekeeping accuracy and meet timekeeping deadlines as established by department and the Fleet.
  • Preparation, set-up and clean-up of class supplies, equipment and classrooms.
  • Create a positive and welcoming environment for classers and their families.
  • Assist at drop-off, pick-up and lunch times.
  • Inspire classes in a positive and engaging manner.
  • Represent oneself and the Museum in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.
  • Ensure the highest level of safety both physically and emotionally.
  • Follow Museum policy and procedure.
  • Opportunities to teach and lead lessons and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Educators or Education Coordinators.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: computers, printers, fax machines, copy machines, basic classroom equipment, outreach equipment.

Physical Requirements of this Position:
Light Work: Position involves sitting, standing, and/or walking. Position requires ability to frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force to move objects and occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects.

Qualifications

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:

  • Must have full availability, Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 6 pm.
  • Position will be scheduled to work onsite and offsite Camp locations.
  • Some college education is required, bachelor’s degree in education or science preferred.
  • Meet minimum qualifications for Classroom Assistant/Instructional Aide: AA/AS degree, 48 college units, or passing score on district’s proficiency exam.
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid Driver's License with current insurance, and be willing to drive Fleet vehicles.
  • Experience teaching/leading school-aged children in hands-on science activities strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in effectively communicating with large groups and directing both students and adults, whether through verbal communication in person, over the phone, or in written form.
  • TB test clearance within 60 days prior to employment or prior to working on a school site.
  • Fingerprint clearance from DOJ/FBI required.
