Position Overview

Student will assist staff in supporting the Talent Search program in serving program participants. Duties may include data entry, filing, call outs, travel to/from Talent Search target schools, supervising students, transporting participants to Talent Search events, participant recruitment, and mentoring. May be requested to assist in planning and organizing activities and curriculum, and setting up computers for staff, and/or students. This position is open for both regular student workers and federal work study student workers.

 

Hours per Week

Up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 35 during the summer

 

College/Department Overview

The University of Central Oklahoma's Talent Search Central Connect Program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program provides cost free educational services for low income and/or potential first generation (neither parent has a four-year degree) students from James L. Capps Middle School, Kenneth Cooper Middle School, Putnam City West High School, Putnam City High School, and John Marshall High School. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youths from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their post-secondary education.

 

Department Specific Job Functions

Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing of academic events and activities. Assist with maintaining database and simple computer set up, and assist maintain computer lab. Transporting participants to/from events and assigned pick-up/drop-off locations. Traveling to target schools to assist Academic Coordinators in the recruitment, advisement, and mentoring of participants. Maintain discipline and balance relations during group activities. Participate in in-service training sessions as scheduled. Serve as a positive role model for participants. Perform other duties as it relates to Talent Search goals and objectives.

 

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half-time enrollment for fall/spring semesters is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible to work as a student employee. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes in order to work during the summer, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.

Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources. Qualifications/Experience Preferred

  • Completed at least 45 college credit hours.
  • Possess strong leadership skills.
  • Background similar to program participants.
  • Experience supervising adolescents from diverse backgrounds.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Have sensitivity of intercultural communication and have good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Dependable.
  • Punctual.
