SUMMARY

This position is responsible for technical engagement across the global reach of AMPP’s technical and standards programs, products, & services (PPS). This position will lead the standards business development team and work closely with the rest of the department’s business development and operational management staff. This position will work directly with industry on technical topics and will serve as an internal technical consultant in their areas of expertise. This position will operationalize technical advancement through standards development; steering innovation; and cultivating healthy, active technical communities and networks. Business activities include establishing and maintaining relationships with organizations and stakeholders in industry, government, and research organizations, to ensure the growth and strategic influence of AMPP technical programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase AMPP’s presence, brand awareness, and influence among industry, regulators/government, and academia.
  • Establish and maintain strategic alliances and third-party partnerships with research organizations, standards setting and standards governing bodies to enhance AMPP’s competitive position.
  • Cultivate opportunities for new AMPP standards and research through coordination with AMPP members and government/industry contacts.
  • Develop research proposals, workshops, symposia, draft standards, whitepapers, articles, and other technical content that advances AMPP toward being the leader in its areas of influence.
  • Support technical and leader constituents involved in AMPP programs. Serve as a technical liaison to technical committees, standards committees, and technical communities in assigned areas.
  • Build and develop relationships with relevant technical and management stakeholders in industry, government, and research organizations to ensure appropriate stakeholder participation in standards development and AMPP technical communities and initiatives.
  • Establish connections in industries not currently served by AMPP to attract new industries/sectors to AMPP’s technical programs. Serve as team lead for an assigned market vertical.
  • Represent AMPP at industry-related conferences as well as in membership/leadership positions in third party organizations’ governance and/or technical committees.
  • Develop and deliver presentations at coatings, corrosion, and materials events to increase awareness of AMPP standards, research, technical communities and associated PPS.
  • Manage expenses within assigned cost centers.
  • Develop and maintain communications in a cooperative and professional manner with all levels of AMPP staff, members, and customers to ensure a positive brand image, teamwork, alignment, and attainment of AMPP’s organizational goals.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

20-30% travel is expected for this role and a passport is required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required in related field; advanced degree and experience with a membership, technical, research, or standards organization is preferred. Education or senior-level experience in engineering, sciences, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
  • At least 10 years’ experience with demonstrated success in product development, business development, or management in a technical area relevant to the position.
  • Experience in one or more of the following markets is preferable: energy (fossil, renewable, chemicals, process industries), civil/government/defense (civil infrastructure, transportation, aerospace, defense, maritime, water and wastewater), global markets, or other emerging industries.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technical topics is preferable: coatings, corrosion, cathodic protection, metallurgy, non-metallics, chemistry, laboratory services, structures, data analytics/AI, field services/inspection, sensing/monitoring.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with diverse cultures

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES 

Has senior management responsibility leading and supervising the Technical Engagement team. Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Should demonstrate a strong leadership presence, professional and personal confidence, maturity and other qualities and characteristics to represent the organization. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members, employees of the organization, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, etc. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to develop and interpret business graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to work in a multi-task environment taking into account various external factors and to communicate efficiently and accurately to both managers/supervisors and subordinate staff.  Must be computer literate with knowledge and experience in digital communication (email, virtual meetings, etc.), word processing, and spreadsheet software. Ability to learn and use association specific software.
