The Post and Courier, South Carolina’s premier news source, is seeking a senior editor to lead our efforts with newsroom recruiting, staff development and community outreach.


This is a new position for The Post and Courier and will report to the executive editor. The journalist in this role will work with all of our news teams in offices throughout South Carolina.


You will be a strong candidate if you’re an accomplished newsroom leader, preferably someone with hiring experience as an editor who has an impressive record of recruiting and developing great talent. You will lead our efforts to strengthen our hiring pipeline, ensuring we attract diverse candidates, and will work with news managers and our HR team to help all of our journalists develop plans for career and skill growth.


Another key responsibility will be to launch a community engagement program designed to help The Post and Courier connect more deeply with the people, places and issues we cover – or should be covering. We’re seeking creativity in this role. We envision frequent roundtable discussions, but our efforts need to go beyond that and should reflect inventive thinking and news involvement in approaches. The goal is to listen and learn – to create stronger connections and an ongoing dialogue with those we cover, to broaden our thinking and inclusivity in coverage, and to come away with story ideas and ways to serve our communities better.

The Post and Courier is privately held and values its relationship with readers, believing in the idea that investing in journalism will lead to digital subscriber growth and a sustainable business. We began expanding across the state in 2020, seeking to fill a void in news deserts or areas where local news coverage had withered. We now operate Post and Courier newsrooms in multiple South Carolina cities.

  • Bachelor’s degree (journalism, communications or English preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience as an editor or manager in news operations.
  • Experience with recruiting, hiring and developing strong talent.
  • Experience with launching and leading newsroom initiatives.
  • Flexibility to occasionally adjust hours to accommodate the fast-changing pace of a newsroom.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to lead across an organization with multiple newsrooms.
  • A start-up mindset – and the drive to own an initiative.
  • Ability to develop recruiting connections across the industry, within journalism organizations and at collegiate journalism programs, particularly in the South.
  • Deep interest in helping staff grow skills and develop career plans.
  • Experience with developing strategy and tactics for successful initiatives.
  • Great collaborative skills and an eagerness to build bridges with key players internally and externally.
  • Great communication skills and the ability to set clear goals, with follow-up to ensure we’re achieving them.
  • Strong coaching skills.
  • Strong editorial judgment and editing skills.
  • Experience working in a digital-driven newsroom and familiarity with the metrics used to assess audience behavior and growth opportunities.
  • Highest ethical standards and journalistic integrity.
