The PACS Support Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) to ensure seamless functionality and accessibility for radiologists, clients, and other healthcare professionals. This role focuses on troubleshooting, user support, and basic system maintenance, serving as the first point of contact for PACS-related issues. The PACS Support Specialist works closely with the PACS Administrator to maintain the integrity of the imaging data and to support the overall functionality of the PACS system for all existing and onboarding clients.
This position includes participating in our 24x7x365 on-call rotation out of our Omaha, Nebraska headquarters.
Job Functions
- Monitor the PACS system daily to ensure optimal performance and availability
- Assist with the integration of PACS with other radiology and healthcare systems, including RIS (Radiology Information System) and EHR (Electronic Health Records)
- Support the management of HL7 messages, particularly ORM (Order Entry) and ORU (Observation Result) messages, under the direction of the PACS Administrator
- Provide first-level support for PACS-related issues, including troubleshooting and resolving basic technical problems
- Assist radiologists, technicians, and other medical staff with PACS system

- Escalate complex issues to the PACS Administrator and coordinate with vendors when necessary
- Ensure accurate and secure storage, retrieval, and transfer of imaging data within the PACS system
- Assist with regular data integrity checks and audits as directed by the PACS Administrator
- Support the implementation of security measures, such as data encryption and user access controls, to protect patient information
- Maintain and update documentation for PACS processes, including user manuals, troubleshooting guides, and standard operating procedures
- Assist in training users on the proper use of the PACS system and related imaging technologies
- Contribute to the organization’s knowledge base by documenting solutions and sharing insights with the team
- Work closely with the PACS Administrator and IT staff to address system
- needs and implement enhancements
- Participate in cross-departmental meetings to understand user requirements and provide feedback on system performance
- Coordinate with vendors and service providers to resolve issues and ensure that service-level agreements (SLAs) are met
Preferred Talents
- Experience with PACS systems, including troubleshooting, basic configuration, and user support
- Understanding of radiology workflows and imaging modalities (CT, MRI, X-ray) and how they interact with PACS systems
- Ability to diagnose and resolve basic technical issues efficiently, with a methodical approach to troubleshooting
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to assist non-technical users effectively
- Meticulous approach to managing imaging data and performing system audits to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Familiarity with DICOM standards, HL7 protocols, and medical imaging workflows
- Basic knowledge of Windows Server, SQL databases, PostgreSQL databases, and networking concepts as they relate to PACS
- Relevant certifications such as PACS Fundamentals Certification or other industry- recognized credentials
- Hands-on experience with OnePacs or Intelerad
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in information technology, Healthcare IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 2-4+ years of experience in healthcare IT, with a focus on PACS or radiology systems
