The full-time Director of Global Engagement (DGE) will be responsible for leading and executing programs, classes, and experiences that connect the Thayer community with the world. This is an 11-month position. Dually reporting to the Assistant Heads of School for Academics and Student Engagement/Well-being, the DGE will facilitate engaging students with local and global communities as well as bringing leading professionals, organizations, and experts to Thayer to further enhance learning opportunities for the upper and middle school divisions. 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Upper School Global Scholars Program, including teaching GS classes
  • Partner with middle school faculty and leadership to enhance global engagement academic and co-curricular programs
  • Plan and execute the Global Speakers Series and Scholars-in-residence/visiting scholars program in partnership with the Asst Head of School for Academics
  • Develop, refine and direct leadership and public service seminars, such as the current Common Good sophomore class; this includes both teaching multiple sections of the seminars and overseeing the teaching team(s) associated with these programs.
  • Coordinate international and domestic service, cultural and experiential learning student trips in partnership with the Assistant Head of School for Student Engagement and Well-being; this includes supporting and training faculty trip leaders, building and maintaining relationships with outside partner organizations and developing new and ongoing opportunities to expand such program offerings.
  • Oversee the Middle and Upper School Community Service Program, including leading/overseeing an afternoon program dedicated to community service in each season. This includes partnering with and supporting faculty on existing and new opportunities, developing and vetting organizations and plans for student experiences. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred
  • Strong experience developing and managing programs and teaching in an academic setting, ideally focused on leadership, public service; experience working with grades 5-12 preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated history of excellent communication and relationship building skills with students, families, colleagues, and organizations
  • Passion for service and working with adolescents, and desire to build relationships
  • Experience with international travel
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, in curriculum, and in relationships with members of the school community
  • High level of comfort and experience with technology in an educational setting
  • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department
  • Exceptional attention to detail, adaptability and the ability to manage multiple projects
