Essential Functions

A Museum Educator is responsible for driving the research, development, and implementation of educational programs within and on behalf of Science Museum Oklahoma.  This includes programs such as summer camps, overnight programming, early childhood activities, volunteer coordination, interpreting science concepts for diverse audiences and special events for all ages.  All programs are guided by the museum mission to “Enrich people’s lives by Revealing the Wonder and Relevance of Science” and are based around inquiry pedagogy. Additional responsibilities will include curriculum writing, workshop presentations, exhibit development, teacher professional development and other duties that support Science Museum Oklahoma in bringing discovery educational experiences to children, families and teachers.


  • Development educational programming for the museum
  • Be responsible for presenting museum information in various formats, TV, written, and online
  • Represent the museum in a professional manner
  • Work collaboratively within the team of people with diverse backgrounds and experience levels
  • Maintain the accuracy and educational integrity of all program information
  • Work directly with children in early childhood activities, summer camps, or other programs
  • Develop ongoing training programs that support high quality facilitation and customer service experiences
  • Work collaboratively with other museum departments
  • Determine programming necessary to support mission-based standards, while meeting financial goals
  • Introduce creative and innovative ideas for programming
  • Embrace inquiry learning and share these experiences with staff and guests
  • Be a true community partner, keeping  interest in community needs and service
  • Tackle new and different tasks as they come up
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Science, or equivalent experience in a formal or informal educational setting
  • Two or more years of experience in a formal or informal educational setting


Availability Requirements:


  • Flexible schedule, with weekend, evening and holiday work required

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of science demonstration safety
  • Experience with inquiry learning techniques, informal education and curriculum development
  • Be able to communicate effectively and respectfully
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, must have very good verbal and written grammar
  • Computer literate, must be proficient in MS Word and Excel, and know how to work with digital pictures; programming skills a plus
  • Strong ability to work with children pre-K through teen
  • Flexible schedule with some weekend, evening and holiday work required
  • Be kind, approachable, confident, and open to correction
  • Have theatrical ability, must not be afraid to be silly in front of people
  • Have excellent logic and problem solving skills
