Position Purpose

The Neighborhood Relations & Support Senior Specialist is an outward-facing position serving as “boots on the ground” for the Habitat Charlotte Region (HCR) service area.  And is instrumental in leading outreach events to enhance neighbor participation as we seek to address the needs of neighborhoods based on the following Quality of Life classifications:  Social Cohesion, Collective Action and Sense of Community. These efforts will be supported by the Neighborhood Reinvestment Oversight Committee (NROC) including its subcommittees. Your work leads to achieving the affiliate’s strategic goals

by supporting Habitat homeowners, executing neighborhood initiatives and promoting resident-led activities, events and programs that foster homeownership, critical home repair and financial education.

Essential Functions

Neighborhood Relations and Support:

  • Function as HCR staff liaison and coordinator for the Neighborhood Reinvestment Oversight Committee (NROC) including leading and facilitating meetings for NROC subcommittees (i.e., WIAN, Grant, AHAM, QoL Framework)
  • Develop and update community/neighborhood statistical profiles that identify gaps in supportive service needs (i.e., food or bank deserts).   Collaboratively work with community partners and neighborhood organizations to either execute or assist with developing a strategic plan that promotes neighborhood engagement and vitality
  • Execute and expand the HCR’s Community Engagement Playbook
  • Collaboratively coordinate with HCR’s Community Engagement Supervisor’s neighborhood events and activities (i.e., Rock the Block Events, Housing Fairs, etc.)
  • Assist neighborhood associations with developing a recruitment plan to increase resident engagement and coalition partners in order to accomplish neighborhood strategic priorities and bolster the neighborhood/community planning process
  • Assist and coordinate training opportunities (i.e., HOA officers, Neighborhood Association trainings) for Habitat homeowners in existing and new neighborhoods including developments that have homeowner associations. Acting liaison between HOAs and property management companies to assist HOA officers with training opportunities and other supportive services that ensure vibrant communities.
  • Continue the development and growth of the Habitat Champions initiative to better engage the HCR homeowners in our efforts as well as higher engagement in their own neighborhoods.
  • Field phone call inquiries from neighbors and residents as it relates to our properties, homeowners, and future developments and provide recommendations and solutions while leveraging the opportunity to better educate the public on our role as a non-profit lender.

Community Outreach & Neighborhood Development Engagement:

  • Provide project support and leadership to designated AmeriCorps staff (when applicable) as they connect with neighborhood leaders and other stakeholders in implementing action plans for the neighborhood, focusing on resident-centered events and activities.
  • Assist HCR staff with organizing and leading community meetings and outreach events in partnership with Construction and Organizational Advancement and Development departments for new and existing Habitat neighborhood developments.
  • Facilitate Habitat 101 (information sessions) in partnership with the FS-Financial Education Team for Homebuyers-In-Process (HIP) classes and Homeowners Association board member trainings for Habitat homeowners.
  • Use various methods to facilitate engagement opportunities for neighborhood residents (i.e., training, one-on-one interviews, focus groups, small group meetings, information meetings & listening sessions and other techniques)
  • Collaboratively coordinate with CHR team engagement opportunities with community partners to provide support for Habitat and CHR homeowners post-closing and construction by distributing information, connecting to resources in the community, and facilitating opportunities for fun and fellowship.
  • Collaboratively coordinate with CHR team (when applicable), inventory, and facilitate volunteer distribution of gifts provided by community partners and volunteers to celebrate new homes and CHR homeowners (when applicable).
  • Collaboratively coordinate with FSD staff the facilitation of financial/educational workshops for existing Habitat homeowners with relevant staff as needed or required.  Workshops include, but not limited to, Will Workshops, Senior Series, Focus on Future, Building Futures, Networking with Neighbors, Home Dedications, Mortgage Burning Ceremonies.

Work Environment

This position requires working indoors in an office setting, driving between locations within the service area in all types of weather, and visiting New Home and Existing Home sites in all types of weather. 

Schedule

  • Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm (occasional evening and weekend hours required)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit at a desk and operate a computer for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to lift/pull up to 40lbs unassisted occasionally 
  • Ability to visit Home Repair sites, including homes that may have stairs 
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle 
  • Ability to communicate in person, over phone and/or computer
