Summary:

Under minimal supervision, the Academy Summer Intensive Pianist provides accompaniment for Houston Ballet’s school, called the Academy. The Houston Ballet Academy’s 2024 Summer Intensive is a 5-week program and runs June 15-July 20, 2024. Travel to/from Houston, housing, and a weekly stipend will be provided. *Minimum: 5 years of experience playing advanced level ballet technique classes required for consideration.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides musical accompaniment for intermediate and advanced ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux, character, and variations classes.
  • Prepares music for variations classes and studies choreography as required.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have the ability to:

  • Play 4-6 hours of class per day, six days per week.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with instructors by listening and responding to their needs and being easy to approach.
  • Consistently offer creative and innovative musical repertoire for class.
  • Be punctual and professional.

  • Organization/Planning Organizes personal workload and sets priorities. Arrives to classes on time and uses class time efficiently.
  • Technical Expertise Possesses the skills, knowledge and expertise required to perform the essential aspects of the job as well as any other related specific educational and/or certification requirements.
  • Communication Communicates effectively in writing and verbally; expresses complex ideas in simple terms. Clearly and concisely expresses in individual or group situations. Comprehends and processes information and responds to communication from others. Communicates, empathizes, uses diplomacy, influences, and gains cooperation. Interacts effectively across functions and levels of the company.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability Admits and corrects mistakes; ensures the integrity of work. Accepts constructive criticism or responsibility for outcomes. Effectively responds to change. Adjusts to and accepts changes in direction and priorities. Sees changes in the business or work environment, understands implications, and adjusts priorities as needed on short notice.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Bending legs downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Ascending or descending stairs, ramps, and the like.
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to regularly lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to continuously play the piano.

 

Work Environment:

  • Well-lighted, heated and /or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting adequate ventilation.
  • Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).

Regular hours Monday- Saturday ranging between 9:00am-8:30pm. Partial day on weekends
