Job Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Director of Individual Giving, the Individual Giving Officer will strategize, plan, and execute all aspects of San Francisco Ballet’s mid-level donor group, the Christensen Society (CS), including solicitation, stewardship, prospect research, cultivation, and benefit fulfillment. This position is responsible for an expansive portfolio comprised of current donors giving between $2,500-$14,999, as well as prospects capable of making gifts of $2,500 or more. This role collaborates with the Development Stewardship Coordinator to play a central role in the Donor Lounge benefit experience during the season and maintains active lines of communication with portfolio donors throughout the year. The Individual Giving Officer is also responsible for helping to craft a fundraising voice for the Individual Giving team by drafting compelling copy for quarterly donor campaigns and other solicitation and stewardship communications. In partnership with the Director of Development Operations and the Annual Fund Operations Manager, this position also provides regular analysis on individual giving results and areas of concern/opportunity.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Using sound fundraising principles, solicits via face-to-face, written, and electronic methods, a portfolio of ~150+ households, comprised mainly of current $2,500-$14,999 donors as well as prospects capable of making a gift at the Christensen Society or higher level. For current donors, deploys a strategic focus on in-person touchpoints to increase affinity, loyalty, and level of donation. Uses Tessitura CRM fundraising software and other tools to monitor and track moves and results.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the CS program, including but not limited to industry-leading stewardship activities, daily thank-you calls, benefits administration, stewardship events (in conjunction with Development Stewardship Coordinator and Development Stewardship Events Manager), coordination of ticketing and other special donor requests, and communication flow. Routinely liaises with internal and external stakeholders, including SF Ballet’s artistic operations and marketing teams and outside vendors.
  • In coordination with the Director of Development Operations, provides regular qualitative and quantitative reporting and analysis to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and the Director of Individual Giving, highlighting areas of concern and opportunities for growth.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Individual Giving and in coordination with the Annual Fund Operations Manager, assists with the execution of quarterly fundraising campaigns in accordance with the annual fund strategy and utilizing all SF Ballet platforms. Writes copy for appeal letters, emails and associated program book ads, drafts language for donor pages in the printed program and on the website and composes talking points for solicitation and thank-you calls.
  • Regularly attends performances during Nutcracker and the repertory season, engaging with CS members in the donor lounge at the War Memorial Opera House (WMOH) before the curtain and during intermissions. Participates in setting strategic seating arrangements in the lounge. Writes seat notes for prospects and donors and engages with new prospects. Provides backstage tours as scheduled. Also attends performances for the purpose of donor stewardship and prospecting during Bay Area tours and SF Ballet School’s Spring Festival.
  • Supports the events team during Gala season, Spring Festival, and other special fundraising events with duties as assigned and on-site participation on the night of the event (e.g., seating, check-in, wayfinding, etc). Solicits portfolio donors for event ticket purchases, sponsorships, auction purchases, and gifts to fund-a-need.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Years and Type of Related Experience Required:
At least three years of individual giving or relevant fundraising experience and familiarity with CRM software (i.e., Tessitura, Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud, Salesforce preferred). Love of performing arts desired, dance or classical music knowledge is a plus. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.

Professional/Technical Competencies:

  • Develops and implements detailed fundraising plans, based on sound fundraising principles for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors in order to meet goals for unrestricted gifts from individuals.
  • Manages all aspects of giving from Christensen Society in coordination with the Director of Individual Giving and Annual Fund Operations Manager. Prepares annual work plan with performance indicators.
  • Successfully solicits individual gifts of $2,500 or more.
  • Develops detailed, holistic strategies (annual fund, event support, other giving opportunities such as the Artists Reserve Fund) for each donor and ensures that the progress of each strategy is documented.
  • Represents SF Ballet at all times with the highest degree of professionalism and communicates the Ballet’s position on sensitive issues without losing the donor’s goodwill.
  • Staffs ballet performances and events.
  • Arranges and attends meetings with donors and prospects, effectively briefing volunteers and others on the meeting strategies.
  • Working with special events staff and Development staff, successfully plans and executes stewardship events, including follow-up with event attendees.
  • Maintains documentation, files, and tracking of all donor contacts, gifts, and stewardship activities in a manner that is accessible by others.
  • Regularly strategizes with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, Director of Individual Giving, Major Gifts Officer, and Events staff to identify and involve volunteer leadership in the cultivation and solicitation of donors.
  • Maintains effective communication and rapport with others, both internally and externally, to track progress and decisions.
  • Utilizes and maintains up-to-date knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, as well as fundraising software.
  • Utilizes and maintains special knowledge to create and monitor accurate budgets and financial reports.
  • Embraces and contributes to the Development team’s culture of collaboration, discretion, kindness, and respect within and across departments. Refrains from gossip, internally and externally, at all times.

Physical Demands:
Position requires periods of word-processing and database usage, and also a flexible schedule to attend various donor-related events and meetings during Nutcracker and the repertory season. Ability to travel if necessary.

Special Equipment/Software Used:
Tessitura; Microsoft Office (including Teams and SharePoint); Adobe Acrobat; Asana; PC and standard office equipment, such as a printer and copier.
