Job Summary 

The Assistant Building Services Manager will assist and lead building operations for events and facility maintenance under the direction of the Director of Building Services and Building Services Manager. The primary focus will be within the technical services unit, and they will work collectively to ensure industry standards are followed for venue and event readiness, such as adequate technical requirements, proper safety standards are met, facility cleanliness, and exceptional event set up. The role demands leadership skills and the ability to delegate effectively to ensure a high-quality outcome. 

 

 

 

Required Education and Experience 

  • At least 2 years of experience in a relatable position. 
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated ability to supervise a team, including training, delegating, coaching, etc.  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Knowledge of audio-visual equipment and experience with isolating, diagnosing, and resolving equipment issues. 
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve customer and employee concerns in a courteous, professional, and effective manner. 
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate, and collaborate within a diverse organization. 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing priorities, and delegate when appropriate. 
  • Must have the ability to navigate quickly and continuously throughout the complex when events are in multiple areas of the building. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. 

 

 

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in applicable field preferred (i.e., hospitality, business administration, technical equipment). 
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, switches, and data cabling 
  • Knowledge of large-scale event management and requirements. 
  • Knowledge of mechanical devices and experience with isolating, diagnosing, and resolving IT issues 
  • Scissor lift/forklift/boom lift experience preferred.

  • A primary function will be to support and provide supervision to Building Services, Technical Services, Security, Overnight and Parking operations. 
  • Manage venue preparations for all events including but not limited to event space and technical requirements set up, cleanliness, welcoming and communicating with clients and guests, monitoring events when in process, and supervising the tear down of all events. 
  • Ensure a high level of customer service to DECC employees, clients, guests, and all visitors. 
  • Coordinate and collaborate with departments to ensure all event needs are met. 
  • When needed, coordinate services with outside suppliers, vendors, event hosts, and guests. 
  • During events, as needed, resolve problems efficiently, courteously, and in a positive manner. 
  • Comprehend, follow, and educate staff about all safety protocols, act as a lead safety resource. 
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations. Inform management when repairs are needed or if there is a concern. 
  • Comprehend and comply with current union contracts as they pertain to positions within Building Services. 
  • Be diligent with cybersecurity procedures and ensure best practices are followed. 
  • Assist with the facilitation of technical support and help desk roles for the organization. Ensure helpful and effective support is provided to all users. 
  • Assist with hardware and software installations, and system updates for the organization. 
  • Assist with managing and providing support for the DECC’s phone system(s). 
  • Attend required employee meetings and training opportunities. 

  

 

 

Schedule 

This position is full-time and will typically work 40 hours per week. Hours will vary and will be based on scheduled events at the DECC. This position will have morning, afternoon, and/or evening shifts scheduled on various days of the week and may include some holidays.  

 

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 
The Assistant Building Services Manager will train and supervise Building Services Staff. 

  • Supervise and lead the following areas: Technical Services, Convention Services, Custodial Services, Parking, Security, and Overnight Labor. 
  • Supervise and manage assignments and priorities. 
  • Delegate work and responsibilities. 
  • Inform Director of Building Services and Building Services manager of any incidents requiring discipline and/or coaching. 
  • Coach employees on performance and complete routine check-ins. 
  • Follow and comply with the current union contracts for part-time and full-time union employees. 

 

 

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment 
This position will require someone that is able to stand on their feet for many hours at a time, moving quickly to different places as needed.  The Assistant Building Services Manager will need to use their hands frequently, see, hear, and speak often, and use telephones and two-way radios throughout the day. The temperature within the facility will range from extremely cold winter temperatures to extremely hot and humid temperatures (80-90 degrees Fahrenheit). Some work may be completed outdoors in the elements, while most will be conducted indoors. This position will require bending and maneuvering, and the ability to move and lift to 40 pounds at times. 

 

  

 

Additional Eligibility Requirements 

  • Must be 18 years of age or older. 
  • Successful completion of reference checks. 
  • Successful completion of a background check. 
  • Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable. 

 

 

 

Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements 
The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s).   
The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources. 

  

 

 

At-Will Employment  
This position is at will. This means if you are offered the position and accept, your employment with the DECC is for an indefinite period of time and it is subject to termination by you or the DECC, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time. Nothing in this job description or any other policy of the DECC shall be interpreted to be in conflict with or to eliminate or modify in any way, the at will employment status of this position. 

The at will employment status of an employee of the DECC may be modified only in a written employment agreement with that employee which is signed by the Executive Director or the Chair of the DECC Board of Directors.

Business casual is standard. 

Attire can fluctuate based on the type of event(s) being held at the DECC, whether it’s more formal or casual. If a DECC-branded shirt is appropriate for an event, the DECC will provide the apparel.
