Stitchers at Houston Ballet are responsible for the sewing and alterations of costumes. They are integral to bringing the artistic vision of each production to life, working collaboratively and creatively to execute costume designs. This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local #896, ensuring fair and standardized working conditions.

 

Responsibilities:

- Expertly perform sewing and precision alterations on garments to meet production requirements.

- Maintain meticulous oversight of sewing supply inventory to ensure smooth operations.

- Uphold a standard of exceptional craftsmanship and artistic excellence, consistently meeting deadlines and budget constraints.

- Contribute to the maintenance, cleanliness, and organization of the costume shop, machinery, tools, and equipment, promoting a clean and safe working environment.

- Exercise discretion and diplomacy in all activities to foster a supportive and secure environment for performers.

- Fulfill any additional duties as assigned by the Head of Costumes and Costume Shop Manager.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

- Possess at least one year of costume construction experience in a professional theater setting, or equivalent.

- Proficiency in operating various sewing machines and adeptness in hand sewing techniques.

- Ability to thrive under pressure and effectively respond to feedback during the construction and technical processes.

- Adaptability to changing priorities while maintaining a proactive approach to creative problem-solving endeavors.
