Description

The Discovery Camp Director position is a seasonal position that reports to the Director of Summer Camp. This position is from June 17-August 2 with the expected hours of work 8:00 am -4:00 pm, Monday-Friday. The Director is responsible for day-to-day camp operations, managing both staff and campers by prioritizing safety of the campers and well-being of the staff. The Director is a leadership presence in nurturing a sense of community and creating a healthy camp environment. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee camp curriculum to ensure that the activities are age appropriate and offer a safe, engaging and high quality summer program. 

  • Manage camper placement within the program and maintain camper attendance records.

  • Communicate with camper families, if needed and maintain a log of communication with the families. 

  • Actively participate in camp activities to build relationships with campers and staff.

  • Ensure all safety protocols and procedures established by Summer@Potomac are followed by all Discovery campers and staff members.

  • Plan and lead camp specific orientation for all discovery staff members

  • Serve as a mentor to the Discovery Assistant Director, Head and Assistant Counselors. Schedule and lead weekly meetings with the Discovery team, oversee the entire Discovery camp staff, including any staff performance issues that may arise. 

  • Supporting and mentoring the Discovery team of counselors (head and assistant) as well as Assistant Director, in all matters, including camper discipline and emergency situations.

  • Working closely with the Discovery Assistant Director to manage the ordering of camp supplies and equipment.

  • Ensuring the proper use of Summer@Potomac facilities and equipment.

  • Oversee assistant counselors evaluation. Schedule, supervise and evaluate Head Counselors. Communicate the Head Counselor and Assistant Counselor evaluation with the Director of Summer Camp.

  • Communicate effectively with the Director of Summer Programs to report any concerns about a camper’s and a staff member’s health, safety and behavior. 

  • Participate in staff orientations, pre-camp staff training, preparations for camp opening and meetings.

  • Adhere to the procedures and policies outlined in the Summer@Potomac Handbook.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age and possess a degree

  • At least 2 years of previous experience as a director, teacher, child care or a related field.

  • Prior experience in managing camps administratively is preferred.

  • Strong social, organizational, communication and computer skills are required.

  • Ability to present in a professional manner, communicate and listen to others.

  • Responsible, energetic, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude.

  • Physical ability to participate in activities with campers (run, sit on the floor, walk and stand for longer periods of time).

  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences within a diverse population of campers and staff.
