PURPOSE OF POSITION:

A School Counselor at Catholic Charities:

  • Obtains information about students through use of interview, case history, relevant assessment measures, and observational techniques.
  • Evaluates data to identify causes of student problems and to determine advisability of school counseling or referral to other specialists or institutions.
  • Provides individual and group counseling support for students in need.
  • Provides coordination, consultation, referral and informational services to faculty, staff, parents, and students.
  • Collaborates with parents in helping students continue in academics and social/emotional growth.
  • Serves as a resource for ideas and strategies that promote student achievement and overall success within the classroom setting and beyond.
  • Participates in parent-teacher conferences for academic and behavioral issues when appropriate.
  • Coordinates special education services with the local public school or district.
  • Selects, administers, and interprets various tests such as rating scales and behavioral/academic screeners commensurate with testing qualification level to provide additional information pertaining to academic/emotional needs.
  • Completes necessary administrative duties (paperwork, etc.) timely and accurately.
  • Acts as an advocate for students and/or student systems when appropriate.
  • Performs appropriate case management based upon accepted standards and program policies.
  • Documents student contacts and progress in accordance with accepted charting standards.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • MA, PhD, or equivalent from accredited university in psychology or counseling.
  • Demonstrates strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to understand and convey to others the values and social teachings of the Catholic Church as they relate to the individual’s treatment.
  • Ability to establish rapport with students, staff, administration, and families.
  • Ability to work effectively within the framework of Catholic teachings.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Salary: Starting at $35,000.00 salary/yr with increases commensurate with experience & education. 

 

Schedule: Dependent on position, The Mission Shelter is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 

 

Training: We provide a robust training curriculum that will support our employees throughout their career.  Training provided within the first year of employment includes: De-escalation & Safety; Public Speaking; Mental Health First Aid; Substance Abuse & Mental Health; Human Trafficking; Trauma Informed Care; and many more.
