ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of Advancing Justice Southern California’s Impact Litigation program and under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney is responsible for performing client counseling and representation duties. The Staff Attorney meets and advises clients of legal rights and issues; conducts legal research, writing, and litigates on clients’ behalf. These activities are expected to include client interviews, meeting with community partners and sister legal services organizations to collaborate on responding to issues, investigating cases, conducting written discovery and depositions, participating in mediation/arbitration, preparing court filings, appearing in court or before administrative agencies, and performing other legal advocacy as needed. The position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Unit.
Your day-to-day responsbilities:
45% Client-Facing Advocacy
- Meet with and advise clients of legal rights and options
- Prepare court filings and other documents on behalf of clients
- Conduct legal research, investigate circumstances of client cases, and identify relevant facts
- Collaborate with community partner and legal services organizations to identify clients and address client needs, and develop opportunities for joint litigation
- Represent clients in depositions, hearings, and court, mediation, arbitration, or administrative proceedings
35% Voting Rights Advocacy
- Investigate and litigate violations of State and Federal voting rights laws
- Work on voting-rights related amici briefs
- Represent populations of interest in court and/or administrative or rulemaking proceedings
20% Other Advocacy
- Assist in developing and presenting community education programs on issues of interest to client communities
- Assist in operating and providing support for AJSOCAL legal clinics
- Participate in community partner collaborations relating to services and advocacy on issues of interest to client communities
- Work with Managing Attorney to meet funding and reporting requirements
- Assist policy advocates with research, analysis, and testimony as needed
- All other duties as assigned
