Company Summary: Aeglea is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that engineers next-generation human enzymes with enhanced properties and novel activity to provide solutions for diseases with unmet medical need. Aeglea is developing pegzilarginase, its lead product candidate, for the treatment of Arginase 1 Deficiency which has received both Rare Pediatric Disease and Breakthrough Therapy Designation. Aeglea has two programs in IND-enabling studies for Homocystinuria and Cystinuria and an active discovery pipeline.

 

Position Summary: Aeglea BioTherapeutics, based in Austin, Texas, is currently recruiting for a Director/Sr. Director, Patient Services.  This individual is responsible for the overall design, implementation, and ongoing performance management of Aeglea’s patient services programs for therapies in rare/ultra-rare disease areas. These patient services offerings may include case management (internal or external), specialty pharmacy, site-of-care initiatives (for HCP-administered therapies), a patient access team, and co-pay assistance programs for eligible patients. This leader will ensure full compliance with all corporate and industry policies and legal and regulatory requirements for these programs. 

This individual reports to the Chief Commercial Officer and will have oversight of internal/external case managers, the company’s specialty pharmacy relationships, and a field-based patient access team.  Success will require close collaboration with multiple functional groups, including but not limited to Sales, Marketing, Market Access, Commercial Operations, Medical and Patient Affairs, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance, and IT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following:

  • Design, establish, implement and manage the patient-centric and appropriate patient services infrastructure (including case management, specialty pharmacy, site-of-care, patient access, and co-pay support functions) to ensure that appropriate patients have rapid and ongoing access to products and support through their patient journey
  • Design, implement, and oversee comprehensive patient services plan that aligns to the overall strategic launch plan with critical success factors, KPIs, SOPs, and appropriate training
  • Lead cross functional teams to develop program enhancements that will improve the overall customer experience and internal efficiencies/effectiveness
  • Build and develop productive working relationships with external service providers and internal cross-functional stakeholders
  • Build and lead field-based patient service team that will be responsible for continued education programs to providers, patients, and caregivers to enhance their understanding of complex reimbursement issues, insurance options and limitations, benefits, and requirements necessary to initiate and maintain therapy
  • Support and troubleshoot the resolution of reimbursement issues according to established SOPs, i.e. insurance changes, prior authorizations, appeals, etc.
  • Negotiate and execute complex contracts/SOWs for desired services
  • Monitor and assess performance of external service partners, ensuring they perform in accordance with agreed upon contracts. Put appropriate corrective measures in place and/or develop alternative solutions to address performance issues
  • Analyze co-pay data to identify trends and opportunities for process/program improvement. Oversee design, development and implementation of workflows to assure seamless experience for customers
  • Oversee development and management of operations budgets and forecasts
  • Ensure that all actions, and those of his/her team both internally and through vendors working on our behalf, are compliant with all laws, regulations and policies
Qualifications

Education/Experience: The ideal candidate will offer:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Business, scientific or related field; advanced degree or MBA preferred
  • 8-10 years commercial and/or operations experience in biotech/pharmaceuticals with at least 5+ years leading large, complex patient services teams, including interacting with providers, patients, and caregivers
  • Rare-disease experience a plus
  • Strong understanding and experience in key commercial processes of portfolio and life cycle management, CRM, sales forecasting, budgeting and P/L management
  • Seeking a blend of science and business skills and experience
  • Experience building high performing teams across multiple geographies and cultures

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in interpretation of regulations and guidelines related to drug development; orphan drug and/or oncology development expertise and experience would be desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships and act as a liaison across the organization

This is a high growth, fast paced, and small organization. The ability to be productive and successful in a scientifically led and data driven work environment is critical. Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally on occasion is required, it is anticipated that this will be ~25% of work time.
