The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.



DOHMH has the mission of improving the sexual health of all New Yorkers. To achieve this, the DOHMH Bureau of Public Health Clinics provides direct clinic services to people seeking sexual health care, and services to sex partners. The Bureau operates sexual health clinics throughout New York City, and testing of patient-specimens for selected sexually transmitted infections is conducted at the DOHMH Public Health Laboratory (PHL).



We are seeking a graduate student in a public health program with focus in laboratory testing to assist the Director of Research and Evaluation in the NYC DOHMH Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Infections and the Associate Director Microbiology at the PHL with an STI surveillance project in the sexual health clinics. This project is focused on describing prevalence and correlates of Mycoplasma genitalium infection.



  • Following a protocol for specimen collection, relabeling, and tracking
  • Ensuring the timely shipment of specimens and related paperwork
  • Managing a database of patient-specimen codes
  • Collaborating with project staff





  • Background and experience working with potentially pathogenic clinical specimens
  • Knowledge of standard infection precaution procedures in a BSL-2 laboratory
  • Experience in basic applications of quality assurance and quality control
  • Strong ability to follow written procedures and protocols
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Detail oriented



This position will be hired through a staffing agency. Compensation for the position is hourly, with a rate up to $20/hour commensurate with experience.
