DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL SERVICES

 

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY!  Please join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Los Angeles Council in its mission to serve those in need. We currently have an opening for a Director of our Social Services Department at the Cardinal Manning Center.  The Cardinal Manning Center is a 65-bed homeless shelter for men located in the skid row section of downtown Los Angeles.

 

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

The Director of Social Services is responsible for providing leadership and the overall management and operations of the programs and services of the Department, including setting goals, preparing budgets, fund-raising, overseeing contracts, acting as the agency’s representative to community agencies and select governmental officials and bodies.  The Director of Social Services reports to the Society’s Executive Director.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • The Director must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Society’s goals and objectives related to homelessness, housing, and other social service issues.

 

  • Provides a culture of professional and ethical leadership for all social service programs and activities. 

 

  • Ensures the Social Services Department’s programs and services are operating effectively at addressing the needs of its service community.

 

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and others, develops and implements the Department's annual operating budget and executes the responsibilities of contracts with local government entities and private foundations.

 

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises staff to effectively carry out the department’s programs and services.

 

  • Directly supervises, supports, trains, and evaluates the department’s case managers, social workers, and other staff to ensure the effectiveness of social services program delivery.

 

  • Develops, administers, and reforms the department’s policies, procedures, plans, and objectives relating to the Department’s programs and services.

 

  • Collaborates with the SVDPLA Executive Director, the Chairperson of the Social Services Advisory Committee, and others on the development and execution of short, and long-term goals for the department.

 

  • Participates with other SVDPLA Program Directors on issues relating to the overall planning, and implementation of the agency’s goals and programs.

 

  • Collaborates with officials from federal, state, and local government, academic institutions, and community stakeholders on issues relating to homelessness, housing, health, and related social services.

 

  • Implements strategic plan of the Social Services Department.

 

  • With input from the Director of Human Resources, conducts or delegates safety team meetings and emergency/disaster preparedness programs within the Social Services Department.  In addition, assists the Human Resource Department in the development and implementation of the overall Master Disaster Plan for the Society.

 

  • Works with the Executive Director, the agency’s fund-raising consultant, and the Social Services Advisory Committee, the Development Department, and others to identify and seek grant funding through foundations, individual donors, and government entities.

 

  • Manages or delegates the responsibility to coordinate the duties and activities and visitors to the Cardinal Manning Center, including students and staff from schools participating in the Urban Plunge Program. 

 

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the SVDPLA Executive Director.

 

 

 

Qualifications/Requirements: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Social Work from an college or university program accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or like body is required. Licensure in the state of California as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred.  Five or more years related work experience with at least two of those years in administrative, management or supervisory positions.  Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.  Thorough knowledge of homelessness, housing, and other social service issues.  Knowledge of individual psycho-social assessment, case management, and treatment processes, and group counseling techniques, and community resources.   And familiarity with developing and managing budgets, grant writing.

 

Physical Requirements of the Job:  Position requires significant time sitting, standing, walking, going up and down stairs, some lifting of objects weighing less than 25 pounds, and traveling between offices.
