POSITION SUMMARY ECRI is looking for a Controller to help create and strengthen its accounting and business process infrastructure as it looks to expand its impact on the betterment of health safety and effectiveness globally.  Reporting to the CFO, the successful candidate will have demonstrated experience overseeing organic and inorganic growth, managing resources, implementing systems, and creating and enforcing policies.  The candidate will have excellent technical accounting abilities and is able to communicate understanding of new and existing GAAP pronouncements (especially as they relate to Not-for-profit entities).  Excellent communication and collaboration skills are critical.

Essential Functions Statements(s)

  • Day-to-day financial operations of the Accounting Office activities including:
    • Manage the month-end account reconciliations and closing process.
    • Ensure that accounting policies, procedures, and processes are established and followed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and good accounting practices.
    • Oversee the fixed asset accounting, investment accounting, payroll and benefit accounting
    • Respond to internal requests for financial data and budget inquiries.
  • Collaborate with and support FP&A team; Assist with internal and external financial reporting and variance analysis.
  • Manage the operation of the Institute’s financial accounting system
  • Responsible for the coordination and successful execution of the annual audits (GAAP, 403(b))
  • Monitor spending associated with all projects/grants
  • Assist with the fiscal year end close process, and the timely completion of the financial statement, federal award, 403b plan audits, as well as the preparation and submission of the IRS Form 990.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements (i.e. HHS, GSA).
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures, internal controls, and new initiatives within the Institute.
  • Identify strategic opportunities to improve processes within the department and throughout the organization.
  • Establish effective Cash Management practices to monitor and control A/R Cash Receipts and A/P Cash Disbursements; and prepare cash forecasts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the CFO.


  • Minimum ten years full time progressively responsible accounting experience is required; Not-for-profit experience preferred.
  • Experience in financial audit coordination.
  • Professional experience to include technical expertise in accounting, financial statement preparation, and cash management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting information systems
  • Operational knowledge and experience implementing accounting and business process systems.
  • The ability to develop, refine, and maintain sound financial and internal control systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with institute constituencies and to effectively lead support staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all levels of the organization are required.
  • Must be motivated, self-directed, and able to work under pressure and simultaneously manage numerous deadlines.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required, CPA is preferred. Solid knowledge of GAAP and regulations
