Founded in 1947 by Nina Vance, the Alley Theatre is a pioneer of regional theatre, and one of the leading nonprofit theatre companies in the United States. Rob Melrose, Artistic Director at the Alley, took over as artistic leader of the organization in 2019. JOB STATEMENT

The Assistant Chief Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in the maintenance and care of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and all life safety elements the buildings that the Alley Theatre operates. In addition, the Assistant Chief Engineer works closely with the Chief Engineer in the supervision of the stationary engineers. The Alley Theatre owns and operates a 75,000 square foot theatre facility and a 75,000 square foot production facility that is on floors 14-18 of the parking garage on the Alley Theatre property.

 

JOB DUTIES

General

  • Work closely with the Chief Engineer in the management of day-to-day activities of maintaining all areas of the Alley Theatre properties.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Engineer, work closely with MM Properties Management (operator of Garage) on the day-to-day operations of the Production Center.
  • Communicate with Alley Theatre staff regarding building maintenance and activities as directed by Chief Engineer.

 

Oversee all Inspections In Coordination with Chief Engineer

  • Elevator Inspections
  • Sprinkler Inspections, Dry/Pipe, Deluge System, Fire Pump, & 5 YR. FDC
  • Fire Alarm Inspection
  • Fire Damper Inspection
  • 5 Year Smoke Exhaust Test
  • 5 Year Gas Test
  • Annual Fire Drop Test {7}
  • Annual Emergency Lighting Test
  • Annual Generator Load Bank Test
  • Fire Extinguisher Inspection

 

Maintain all Building Permits In Coordination with Chief Engineer

  • Banner Permits {4}
  • Elevator Operating Permit
  • Spray & Dipping Permits {2}
  • Flammable Storage Permits
  • Hot Works Permits
  • Place of Assembly
  • Combustible Waste Permits
  • Boiler Operating Permits {6}
  • Meet with High/Low Rise Fire Marshal and have all Inspection Reports available upon request
  • Meet with all City Inspectors

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises three engineers with Chief Engineer.
  • Monitors licenses and permit renewals for departmental staff.
  • In collaboration with Chief Engineer, motivates and coaches employees to improve performance, provide feedback and training opportunities.
  • In collaboration with Chief Engineer, organizes and oversees the schedules and work of departmental staff.
  • Ensures staff members follow company policies and procedures.

 

REQUIREMENTS (SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE):

  • 5+ years of related work experience in a commercial property setting or any similar combination of education or experience in the operation, installation, and maintenance of building systems and in depth understanding and knowledge of all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire/life safety systems.
  • Must be familiar with BAS Building Automation Systems such as Convergentz and Metasys
  • Must be familiar with MEP
  • Experience managing a team of people.
  • Basic computing skills in Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of building systems and operations.

 

Ideal licenses and permits:

  • Engineering License from the City of Houston
  • Boilers Permit
  • 3rd Grade Engineering License
  • 2nd Grade Engineering License
  • 1st Grade Engineering License

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Employee is regularly required to communicate in-person as well as by email, phone, and video conference
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast paced environment where directions and priorities can change rapidly
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must have ability to stoop, stand, climb, frequently lift a minimum of 50 lbs. of equipment (pumps, tools, ladders) and safely install rigging/lifting devices,
  • Regularly required to crouch and reach to install/move equipment by bending forward at the waist or by bending legs and spine,
  • Involves movement between departments, floors, and properties to facilitate work,
  • Regularly required to communicate in-person as well as by email, phone, and video conference.
  • Regularly required to utilize vision abilities, allowing reading of printed material, drawings, and schematics.
  • Typical hours are during the day, but the position requires the flexibility to be available for weekend, holidays and evening work hours during performances and as needed.
