nature of position

Senior level in-house attorney will develop and implement Legal Operations’ strategic plan and budget in partnership with the General Counsel; focus substantial time on the management and training of legal support staff, including loan closers and paralegals, as assigned; partner with other in-house attorneys and leadership in the Legal and Risk Management division; and be primary legal advisor for business units on transactional real estate matters, compliance with state and federal laws; tax and regulatory matters; and other business matters, as assigned. Operates with a high degree of independence. This position reports to the General Counsel and is a member of the CHFA Leadership Team.

 

essential functions

  • Assist General Counsel with annual budgeting process, development and implementation of strategic vision, and strategic reviews of legal operations department
  • Supervise the work of direct reports; drive, track and report on their progress against strategic goals and objectives, and provide coaching and training for support staff to improve their knowledge and skills
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other attorneys to provide strategic, holistic and coordinated legal services for the organization.
  • Facilitate communication among General Counsel, legal division staff and throughout CHFA to achieve business goals
  • Under the direction of the General Counsel, responsible for hiring & recruiting legal support staff
  • Function as leader and seasoned advisor to business units
  • Interpret laws, regulations and procedures related to CHFA’s programs and review proposed legislation and its impact on CHFA operations
  • Review, draft and negotiate forms, contracts, program documents and other legal documents relating to CHFA programs and services
  • Participate and contribute in all activities and/or projects that directly support CHFA in fulfilling its mission and achieving its vision through dedication to the community in which CHFA serves, operational excellence, and fiscal responsibility
  • Other duties as assigned by General Counsel

 

 

Qualifications

Must possess:

  • Effective leadership skills demonstrating one’s ability to inspire and motivate high performance and lead a diverse team
  • Ability to provide leadership to others in and outside of Legal Department and to be an effective member of the Leadership Team
  • Solid understanding of laws and regulations impacting CHFA’s business operations to ensure proper compliance and oversight on business processes
  • Knowledge of Colorado real estate law, commercial lending, business entities, real estate loans, real estate transactions, and familiarity with related documents
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, productively and accurately in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and important deadlines
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Strong and effective customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Strong and ethical decision making skills
  • Strong initiative with the ability to seek out relevant information prior to making decisions
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in an effective and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds

experience/education

  • Applicants must have a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in a law firm or corporate law department working on complex commercial loan and real estate matters
  • Preferred candidate will have experience representing a financial institution related to lending, structuring complex financial transactions, commercial loan workouts and restructuring 
  • Must possess a law degree and be admitted to the Colorado Bar
