Function Summary:

The position is responsible for the direction and guidance of the Safety, Security and Environmental group and programs across all domestic locations. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal requirements from a safety prospective including OSHA, MSHA, EPA and other applicable organizations.    

Essential Functions/Key Accountabilities:          

  1. Follow direction provided by Executive Management Team.
  2. Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to, and enforcing, all safety procedures and policies inside and outside the facility, including use of personal protective and McLanahan equipment as required.
  3. Represent McLanahan Corporation in a positive manner both internally and externally while adhering to the organization’s core values.
  4. Communicate effectively with co-workers, management, customers, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  5. Responsible for ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, EPA and other state and local regulations. 
  6. Develop safety training programs that are applicable to all locations. Supply necessary material to appropriate personnel to promote trainings in a variety of menus including monthly meetings, startup meetings, etc.
  7. Maintain a current knowledge of industry, regulations, and trends that impact the business.
  8. Develop department goals that align with the business objectives, identify metrics to measure staff activity and hold staff accountable to meeting metrics.
  9. Promote communications with internal customers to ensure alignment between functions.
  10. Maintain appropriate documentation (inspections sheets, certifications, and training sheets) for safety program to ensure the documentation meets the legal requirements.
  11. Travel, as needed, to support business activity.
  12. Research and implement ‘best practices’ initiatives to ensure a World Class Safety Culture.
  13. Provide guidance to all employees, supervisory, and individual contributors, on safety issues and concerns.
  14. Ensure that all incidents are investigated, documented and report all safety related operations including work related injuries and near misses.
  15. Develop, communicate and maintain an approach to ensure injured employees are receiving prompt medical care.
  16. Ensure all inspections of the facilities are accurate and complete to adhere to local, state and federal regulations.
  17. Investigate and recommend the proper safety equipment for a procedure and employees, provide training on the proper method to utilize the equipment.
  18. Collaborate with the Workers Compensation Carrier to ensure proper documentation is completed and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.
  19. Collaborate with the Workers Compensation Carrier and department to return injured employees to work within a timely manner.
  20. Develop, maintain and implement policies and procedures ensuring conformity with OSHA, EPA and MSHA requirement and state/local ordinances.
  21. Coordinate and Chair the McLanahan Corp Safety Committee promoting employee awareness internally and externally.
  22. Promote communications-implement and maintain a reporting procedure to communicate all safety incidents to the appropriate parties internally and externally.
  23. Develop, implement and maintain an approach to investigate safety incidents, identifying the root cause and promoting corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.      
  24. Chair and lead an Employee Observation Feedback Safety Program.

Educational/Other Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or Associates Degree in Safety, or related area.
  2. Minimum five (5) years of experience in a Safety position within a heavy manufacturing environment.
  3. Computer literacy including MS Office applications.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  6. Ability to successfully reach company goals in an environment in which a wide degree of creativity and latitude is required.
  7. CSP, ASP, SMS, or CHST certification desired, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

This position is typically located in an office setting and requires sitting and standing for long periods of time. The position requires ambulatory skills sufficient to travel domestically and internationally. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, visual acuity to use a keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of both verbal and written communication. Ability to frequently maneuver (carry, lift, move, etc…) 50 pounds.
