Job Description

St. Mary Catholic Parish in Littleton, Colorado is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Director of Music to lead our parish families in the way of worship through sacred music.

JOB PURPOSE:

To work as a member of the parish liturgy team to foster “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy by promoting the expression of faith through song.  To accomplish this, the Director of Music must lead and facilitate musical participation during liturgies and encourage our parish families and ministries to offer musical expression in their own specific way.

 

GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

In conjunction with the liturgical norms and guidelines of the Church, the vision of the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary (DCJM) and quality musical presentation, the Director of Music will develop and lead a music ministry program that will serve and enhance all liturgies as well as parish life.  In addition, the incumbent will seek to facilitate and increase participation by our assemblies, and aid in their worship.

  • Insure that music is provided at every Sunday Mass, Holy Day, Thursday Adoratio, and Saturday morning Marian Mass.
  • Educate the assembly in singing and understanding the meaning of the sacred music.
  • Direct and form various choirs, ensembles and bands that serve at the parish’s regular weekend liturgies, and on holy days and other special liturgical celebrations.
  • Offer different music programs for the education of children and families.
  • Oversee and organize music ministry participation at funerals, weddings, other sacramental celebrations, and parish retreats.
  • Prepare for liturgical seasons and key liturgies in collaboration with the Director of Liturgy.
  • Coordinate musical support for catechetical and evangelical activities for the school and other ministries.
  • Join with staff to foster a spirit of welcome and develop a ministerial focus on the weekend Mass experience.
Qualifications

TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE PROFILE:

  • Degree in Music (Masters preferred)
  • Significant experience in participating and/or leading liturgical music in a parish or related environment, and choral directing experience.
  • Be a person of living faith, who is prayerful and deeply committed to Christ and His Church.
  • Understand and grow in knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church, including scripture, sacraments, creed, and morality.
  • High degree of proficiency with a principal instrument capable of providing musical leadership during liturgies, preferably organ and/or piano.
  • Working knowledge of other instruments that might be used in a liturgical setting and appropriate usage of these instruments in liturgical settings.
  • Effective choral and instrumental conductor capable of directing both amateur and professional musicians, leading a choir in vocal exercises and providing vocal training as needed.
  • Ability to lead and train musicians.
  • Ability to skillfully lead congregational singing.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to acquire knowledge on the role of sacred music in the formation of the interior life of the person.
  • Skilled at interpersonal relationships with experience and knowledge to deal with negative situations effectively; the ability to look to the bigger picture and the perspective of the pastor, DCJM and Director of Liturgy & Spiritual Life when making decisions; to work as a team player and to encourage team building with staff as well as designated team leaders within own ministry.
  • Possess extensive knowledge of a quality repertoire of liturgical music that spans various styles and forms, and understand the integration of musical and liturgy as practiced in the norms and traditions of the Catholic Church.
  • Ability to help others identify their gifts and talents.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate and communicate with those involved in parish programs.
  • Ability to monitor expenses and maintain a budget.
  • Understand and implement parish and diocesan guidelines concerning safe environment and strict adherence to the parish safe environment program.
