The National Director of Campaigns leads AIUSA's work to develop, implement and evaluate Amnesty’s priority campaigns. Each year, the organization prioritizes two campaigns, engaging the full capacities of the organization, including research, organizing, communications and member engagement. The two current priority campaigns are Gun Violence and Refugee Rights. The National Director of Campaigns also oversees crisis response, including short-term campaigns to address new violations of human rights that emerge at the state, national or global level.  Reporting to the Chief Impact Officer, the National Director manages a staff of campaigners, and works with other teams in the Impact department (public affairs and government affairs), with Amnesty’s 200,000 active members and over 1 million supporters, and with others in the organization to advance our campaigns. AIUSA engages in public education and legislative campaigns at the state, national and global level using a variety of tactics such as petitions, grassroots lobbying, direct actions and mass mobilization.



  • Develops AIUSA’s campaign strategies to achieve impact on human rights in the U.S. and globally
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner and collaborator with other program, advocacy and membership teams
  • Participates in shared responsibility and collaboration with AIUSA volunteer leaders; engages internal and external constituents in activism and advocacy to support our campaigns
  • Manages a growing campaigns team; serves as a mentor and coach, working collaboratively with staff in planning and implementing work plans
  • Works with colleagues across the Amnesty global movement to advance global campaigns and to collaborate on human rights impact
  • Represents Amnesty International USA to external partners and fosters collaboration and alliances
  • Leads team implementation of the organizational strategic plan to achieve four-year goals
  • Serves as a member of the senior leadership team to ensure achievement of the goals and objectives of the organization as a whole and help establish organizational policies and processes
  • Applies creativity and innovation to campaigning strategies; identifies best practices in the field of campaigning; supports testing and evaluation to improve organizational impact
  • Develops and manages the unit’s budget; supports fundraising efforts to secure additional resources for campaigning
  • Collaborates closely with other teams in the organization to develop strategies to recruit and engage members and activists and grow our supporters

Experience required:

  • At least 12 years of relevant experience with increasing levels of responsibility, including experience in issue-based, political or legislative campaigns
  • Experience working in an advocacy and values-driven organization.
  • Experience recruiting, training and managing a campaign team.
  • Experience in campaigning resulting in policy change.
  • Experience working with members and volunteers, especially with models of distributive leadership.
  • At least five years of experience managing staff.
  • Experience preferred in each of the following areas of work:
    • Digital campaigning
    • Media campaigning
    • Volunteer-led distributed campaigning
