Position Title:  Cook

The Susie Gray Dining Hall is much more than just about food.  It’s our opportunity to bring our guests together in a beautiful, friendly environment with great food to enhance their experience at Scarritt Bennett Center.  Many of these guests are here participating in one of our many programs, others are with family members or friends being treated at local hospitals and many are here for weddings or memorial services.

Preparing quality food and presenting it in an attractive manner are just the start of our job!

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Understanding and maintaining food handler’s safety and sanitation standards.  ServSafe Certification will become a legal requirement soon.  You will be paid to attend the Davidson County course in food handler’s safety as well.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends.
  • Punctuality.
  • Good time management skills for food preparation and production.
  • Capability to work well in a team environment.
  • Creative, energetic and resourceful to handle problems relating to unpredictable numbers of guests/food shortages.
  • Good communications skills
  • Able to retain menu preparation procedures and verbal requests.

Daily Duties:

  • Report to work on time and ready to work in clean uniform.
  • Check Catering and Dining Hall Menus
  • Plan and organize prep and production.
  • Identify special menu/dietary requirements for that shift/event and locate the necessary products.
  • Working in a timely manner and asking for help if needed.
  • Setting up buffets in Dining Hall and/or having catering foods hot or cold and wrapped for transport.
  • Putting away incoming stock as quickly as possible, rotating as necessary.
  • Properly storing unused product, label and date according to current health department requirements.
  • Transfer dirty dishes and pans to dish room or pot sink.
  • Thorough cleaning of kitchen prior to leaving

Work Environment:

This job often operates in a fast-paced manner and multi-tasking and prioritizing are a necessity.  SBC is a team oriented organization, meaning everyone is encouraged to ask for and provide help as needed.

Physical Demands: 

To successfully perform the essential functions of the job you must be able to sit, climb and balance, bend, stoop or kneel.  Moving objects 50 pounds or more is another requirement.  Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This in as as needed p9osition.  Working some weekends, late nights and occasional holidays are required.  Days and hours vary according to business needs.  A flexible schedule is encouraged, with the yearly average being around 20 hours per week.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ability to read and comprehend labels on chemicals and recipes.
  • Two years’ experience in a commercial kitchen.
  • High school diploma/GED

 

Uniform:

  • Black pants, black shirt and non-slip safety shoes.
  • No headphones, ear buds, blue tooth or similar devices.
  • Hair and facial hair neatly trimmed or restrained
  • Jewelry in moderation
  • Cell phone use during breaks only
