Job Purpose: Assist St. Petersburg Veterinary Center personnel and provide friendly and responsive customer services for check-in and check-out, as well as schedule appointments for our customers. Be knowledgeable about services, practices and the appropriate level of communication with clients.


Responsibilities and Duties:

Essential Functions:

  • Clean and disinfect medical facilitites (i.e. wiping down counters and other surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors). 
  • Complete routine tasks such as weighing pets.
  • Walking dogs safely in the SPVC gated yard.
  • Have basic vaccine knowledge, and be able to pull up vaccines.
  • Restrain animals during exams and diagnostics.
  • Clean surgical instruments, prepare surgical packs, and operate the autoclave.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service.
  • Keep accurate and updated records and enter data as required into Avimark.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service in a busy environment.
  • Handle telephone and email traffic to coordinate appointments, and client communications to other staff members.
  • Check-in and check-out customers using clinic software.
  • Use POS system for sales.
  • Assist other medical team employees as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings.
  • Professionally represent SPCA Tampa Bay at all times.

Nonessential Functions:

  • Assist other SPVC team employees as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.




  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Licensure or Certification:

  • Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record.


  • One to two years of part-time or full-time general veterinary work experience preferred.
  • Volunteer service in a shelter, animal hospital, or similar facility preferred.

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Ability to provide excellent service and care for customers and animals.
  • Ability to objectively observe animal behavior.
  • Ability to operate computer, printer, copier, telephone, fax machine and smartphone.
  • Ability to recognize changes in condition or behavior as indicators of possible problems.
  • Ability to show compassion for animals and their owners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with medical staff.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of humane methods of care, handling, and restraint of animals.
  • Genuine concern for all animals and their welfare.
  • Knowledge of animal communications.
  • Manual dexterity for handling animals, medical instruments and equipment and for completing intricate tasks.
  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA and DEA standards and requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Avimark practice software.
  • Working knowledge of standards and practices applicable to animal medical records.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Activities require the handling of pets of all sizes.
  • Carrying, pushing and/or pulling.
  • Moderate physical effort – regularly lifting or moving up to 25 lbs.  Occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional exposure to animal feces and potential for scratches and bites.
  • Occasional exposure to high noise levels, such as in dog kennels.
  • Stooping, kneeling, bending and crouching.
  • Walking and prolonged standing.


  • Reliable transportation. 
  • Ability to pass required background checks.
