Temporary Carpenter

A Northwest leader in protecting animals since 1967, the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) shelters homeless animals, rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife, and empowers people to demonstrate compassion and respect for animals in their daily lives.

 

 

Position Title:               Temporary Carpenter (40 hours/week for 6 months)

Starting Wage:              $36.00 – $38.00/hour

 

Purpose Summary:

Produce infrastructures and complete crucial construction projects requiring completion in 2024/2025 contributing to successful completion of tasks involving a variety of animal care enclosures. Perform work to comply with regulatory agency codes and under general supervision.

Essential Responsibilities:

In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and install various animal enclosure visual blinds of varying materials and with varying installation methods dependent on enclosure and species housed (wood, HDPE, Sheet metal, and netting).

Examples of some projects include:

    • Build small roof tops/roofing in select locations on top of existing animal enclosures (clear corrugated plastic roofing structures).
    • Build fencing as needed for visual blinds.
    • Rebuild second entry access on specific animal enclosures such as four raccoon enclosures.
    • Build and acquire permits for animal care screened in porch used for songbird care.
    • Various enhancements to the aquatic center relating to visual blinds and rodent proofing.
  • Perform repairs to the buildings and animal housing areas as directed by Sr. Director.
  • Minimal staining, priming and painting as needed for weather protection of materials installed.
  • Ensure compliance with all permits, codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations including, but not limited to constructions codes and ordinances, electrical and fire safety.
  • Follows all safety and security procedures and protocols.

Other Responsibilities include:

  • Helps to maintain the Snohomish facility workshop in a tidy and organized manner ensuring a safe environment. 
  • Ensures positive working relationships with product and service vendors, volunteers, and visitors to PAWS providing great customer service from PAWS.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Controls Over Work

The Temporary Carpenter works under the general direction of the Sr Director of PAWS Wildlife Center and Companion Animal Services and is expected to pursue the established duties without detailed supervision.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in basic carpentry, with basic electrical and plumbing knowledge, and skills; including, experience working with power tools, hand tools and other construction equipment. 
  • Working knowledge of wood properties and construction materials.
  • Own and use a wide range of tools necessary for all aspects of construction and personal all weather gear.
  • Any additional relevant certification will be considered an advantage (CMRP, HVAC, etc).
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington driver’s license with no record of major or repeated minor traffic offenses and auto insurance with required coverage limits.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Responsible and organized.
  • Able to start and fully complete each project efficiently without distraction and stay on task to completion prior to doing next project.  
  • Work respectfully around a wildlife campus following species protocols with no animal interaction. PAWS operates a wildlife rehabilitation campus and accommodation will be made to ensure this employee is trained on where to work, how and what to avoid while working in the campus to get the projects needed done. No animal care experience is required with this position.
  • A self-starter, able to take initiative and work independently in an efficient and productive manner; including being organized and flexible, able to balance multiple projects and adjust to rapidly changing conditions.
  • Able to effectively follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Understand and practice standard industrial safety protocols, including SDS information.
  • Work cooperatively and communicate clearly about PAWS’ mission and the safety of the public and other employees.  Always represent PAWS professionally.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, working effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of people while maintaining high quality customer/public relations. Ability to assist in creating a positive working environment built on team concepts.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift a minimum of forty (40) pounds and perform construction duties and safely use and climb ladders.  Work at PAWS Snohomish Wildlife Center campus, in all weather conditions, and requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other strenuous activities. Must be able to work on top of various animal enclosures with appropriate tie offs, harnessing, and safety measures in place.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.
