Essential Functions

Summary/Objective 

MONITOR Applicants and employees MUST QUALIFY (at the time of hire) AND (as a monitor employee) BE ABLE TO DO THE FOLLOWING LISTED FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS:

School bus attendants are responsible for the safety and comfort of students riding on a school bus. School bus attendants perform supervisory work in overseeing the safety and comfort of students riding on a school bus and crossing streets.

Essential Functions

  1. Ability to read in the English language, to identify road signs, read necessary forms, bus route materials, bus inspections forms, and company policies and procedures manual.
  2. Possess basic math skills to count children on the bus (1 through 77).
  3. Ability to write legibly in the English language to maintain necessary records and forms as outlined by company policy.
  4. Ability to lift and move a student.
  5. Able to repeatedly operate a wheelchair lift, properly strap and lock the wheelchair in place which requires bending, pulling, stretching and mechanical skills to operate safety equipment.
  6. Communicate with children in the English language to maintain control and give precise instructions
  7. Communicate with school principals and parents in the English language to discuss problems that arise on the bus.
  8. Assist students who become ill on the bus.
  9. Able to use a two-way radio to transmit and receive messages from the dispatcher.
  10. Able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously while concentrating on the safety of children, as well as their physical, mental, or emotional needs.

Competencies

  1. Must be able to negotiate a 36” jump and climb from the emergency door.
  2. Have the ability to walk forward and backward without assistance.
  3. You will be tested on emergency evacuation procedures.

Work Environment

  1. Must be able to tolerate hot and cold weather,
  2. Must be able to tolerate diesel fuel fumes, odors, and moderate dust conditions.
  3. Must be able to work in an environment with limited to moderate level of supervision and an atmosphere of informal autonomy: This requires an adaptability to variable pressures and paces in any given workday.

 

Physical Demands

Standing/ Walking:         

Activity: Loading and unloading students.

Longest Single Duration: Varies

Grade: Varies

Terrain: Gravel/blacktop/concrete and/or bus aisle 22 steps to the back of the bus.  Bus aisle is 12” wide.

Sitting: 

Total Time: 3 to 7 hours.

Activity: While riding on bus.

Longest Single Duration: 2 hours.

Type of Seat:      As normally provided by School Bus manufactures.

Lifting: 

Activity: Must lift wheelchair dependent children during emergency situations

Pushing/Pulling:                              

Activity: Grasping wheelchair handles securement of the wheelchair and lap belt.

Frequency: 6 to 8 times per day (more frequent on handicap buses)

Handle Height: 30 to 42 inches.

Handle Distance: Body width plus area for walking.

Bending or Stooping:

Activity: Fasten belts and other safety restraints.

Frequency: Varies

Climbing:

Activity: Climbing in and out of the bus.

Frequency: 6 to 8 times per day (more frequent on Handicap buses).

Note: Three steps 12 “each approximately.

Reaching:                                           

Activity: Attending to the needs of students.

Sight:                                                    

Activity: A minimum of 20/40 vision in both eyes.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Workday hours are 4-8 hours per day.

 

Required Education and Experience

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  2. Must pass a physical examination.
  3. Must pass a drug/ alcohol screen, and submit to drug/ alcohol testing as required.
  4. Must complete 10 to 20 hours attendant training programs including first aid and CPR.
  5. Must be willing to submit, or have a felony criminal record check.
  6. Must be a US citizen or have proper Immigration and Naturalization Service work permits.
