This position is responsible for leading the direction of the library and supervising all major divisions of library services. It performs day-to-day management of the library, including creating, reviewing, and updating library polices; managing all aspects of the library systems, preparing, presenting, and managing the operational budget; hiring, supervising, and evaluating all library staff.  This position also has the responsibility for complex library technical and administrative decisions. 

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans and directs the goals, objectives, and operations of the University library. 
  • Analyzes information on the effectiveness and efficiency of the library and recommends operating policies and procedures. Prepares regular statistical reports for the University administration.
  • Supervises subordinate professional, clerical, and student employees.  Reviews and conducts employee performance evaluations.  Approves staff schedule. Processes the payroll. 
  • Participates in the selection and evaluation of library materials through consultation with program directors and staff members, as well as independent analysis.
  • Maintains daily contact with staff regarding systems operations problems. Troubleshoots system equipment problems and provides guidance to system users.
  • Prepares, monitors, and reports on the annual budget.
  • Supervises the Tutors /Academic Success Center.
  • Manages and maintains vendor relations.
  • Works to continually improve the academic resources of the library.
  • Participates on Goodwin University committees and task forces as assigned
  • Attends meetings and participates in professional library organizations; represents the University in library associations.
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and ensures all work safety practices are followed.

Other Functions

  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of academic library administration.  Knowledge of library best practices
  • Considerable knowledge of computer technology as it relates to academic library functions.
  • Considerable ability in oral and written communications
  • Critical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Financial management skills
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse staff and serving a diverse community
  • Considerable ability to administer the activities of a library system and to supervise the work of others.
  • Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers, associates, officials of other agencies and the general public.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library Information Science from an accredited college
  • Minimum seven years of progressively responsible library administrative experience including at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Expertise using library technology/library systems
  • Strong commitment to higher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels
