Reports To: Director of Education and Public Programs

Salary Range: $58,000 - $65,000

Status: Exempt Salaried

Position Summary
The Associate Director of Studio School reports to the Director of Education and Public Programs and is responsible for the strategic planning, administration, management and supervision of classes, workshops, programs and other initiatives at Studio School.

Studio School offers classes and workshops for adults and teens that are taught by professional art educators and university/college faculty and offered year-round at our new campus in downtown Oklahoma City. It is a place to be challenged and explore new perspectives while learning and expanding skills, improving techniques and experimenting with familiar and new media. Studio School provides a variety of offerings that foster creativity, stimulate intellectual curiosity and support students as they grow and strengthen their talent and reflect on their own practice. Oklahoma Contemporary offers quarterly four- and eight-week sessions and various workshops across multiple disciplines, as well as options to work outside of a structured class through rentals and Open Studio sessions. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Work with Director of Education and Public Programs to implement a multi-year plan for Studio School to achieve departmental and organizational goals and take advantage of Oklahoma Contemporary’s new studio facilities.
  • Support the Director of Education and Public Programs in the development of a robust program of classes and workshops across a range of artistic disciplines and the identification of potential instructors and partners who would contribute to the growth and success of Studio School.
  • Develop classes and workshops that link to and support exhibitions or institution-wide initiatives.
  • Generate revenue through efficiencies and new program development.
  • Explore opportunities for leveraging the artistic and physical assets of Oklahoma Contemporary. 
  • Recruit, hire, support and evaluate all Studio School instructors and staff.
  • Prepare annual budget covering all aspects of program expenses and revenue with a focus on net income.
  • Streamline systems and processes for registration, enrollment, studio maintenance, building access and communication with instructors and students.
  • Supervise and support the Manager of Ceramics Program and Studio in the development and implementation of systems for the Ceramics Studio.
  • Supervise the Coordinator of Studio School.
  • Enforce studio policies and safety procedures for all staff and instructors, including safety issues in The Studios building and main building.
  • Work cooperatively with Education and Public Programs colleagues and across departments and contribute to an organizational culture that is dynamic and highly collaborative.
  • Execute a comprehensive evaluation plan for instructor performance and to assess student learning and quality of experience.
  • Work with diverse audiences and external stakeholders to develop and administrate the existing Creative Communities initiative and other programs focused on expanding art access to new and historically underrepresented populations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications to develop marketing strategies to promote Studio School sessions.
  • Write and present routine reports on Studio School programs to colleagues, senior leadership, executive committees and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate:

  • M.A. or equivalent or commensurate professional experience in arts administration, museum education, higher education administration or management within an academic setting with a minimum of five to seven years of experience.
  • Familiar with standard visual and performing arts practices, including but not limited to dance, drawing, digital media, fiber arts, painting, performance, printmaking, sculpture and more.  
  • Demonstrated engagement in the broader museum learning or arts administration field through authored publications or presentations at professional organizations. 
  • Exceptional communicator with outstanding written, organizational, analytical, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Crisis-resilient, comfortable navigating the unexpected and confident exercising independent judgment when necessary.
  • Confident interacting with diverse publics, including instructors, staff, students and other community partners.
  • Works effectively in an environment where work interruptions occur frequently, where work on multiple projects is common and where timelines on project completion are tight.
  • Committed to welcoming, valuing and engaging positively with people of all backgrounds, perspectives and experiences, as well as supporting and promoting an environment that welcomes difference and diversity.
  • Appreciates and pursues the high level of excellence required in all aspects of operations. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of innovative programming.
  • Well-developed commitment to collaborative leadership and the ability to manage and grow a team’s skills. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required; experience with Asana, and Tessitura is a plus; able to navigate or learn other platforms as needed.
  • Willing to occasionally work Saturdays and evenings to support programs.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese or American Sign Language a plus.

Essential Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • BA or BFA with a background in studio art, art education, higher education or related field and knowledge of contemporary art, artists and artistic practice.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Education and Public Programs.
