POSITION SUMMARY:

The Swim Team Coach reports to the Site Director and or Aquatic Director and ultimately to the Head Coach. This position is responsible for the role of coach for the specific training groups assigned and will support the lead site coach and the Head Coach with the achievement of the Mission, Vision, and goals of the overall Upper Palmetto YMCA.

  • Plan, prepare, and conduct team practices (both swimming and dryland) in accordance with program strategies, objectives, guidelines, and policies
  • Swim meet attendance as assigned
  • Assist swimmers and parents with meet entries
  • Maintain swimmers’ attendance records each season
  • Maintain practice log/skill list for each training group
  • Make recommendations for training group level placement and changes
  • Make announcements weekly concerning news or upcoming events
  • Distribute awards won after each meet attended
  • Secondary Coaching Responsibilities
  • Serve in deck assistant role with other practice groups as assigned
  • Serve in substitute role as assigned to cover other practice groups when regular coach cannot be present
  • Assist in organizing extracurricular practice group activities
  • Attend bi-annual all-staff training meetings as scheduled
  • Complete and email weekly time information to Head Coach in a timely manner
  • Assist in special projects (banquets, picnics, fundraisers, award ceremonies) as assigned
  • Parent Communication and Education
  • Be available to speak with parents 10-15 minutes before and after practices (as needed)
  • Contact parent(s) if swimmer is absent without notification for one week
  • Communicate with parent(s) if swimmer is not participating in meets they are eligible to attend
  • Consult with parent(s) regarding training group level changes
  • Attend Parents’ Meeting at the start of each new season
  • Conduct periodic Parent/Coach conferences as necessary (led by Head Coach)
  • Be a positive role model for young people by demonstrating YMCA values and a work ethic that promotes success
  • Abide by the YMCA of the USA Swimming and Diving, ASCA, and USA Swimming Code of Ethics
  • Remain current on all necessary certifications needed to coach
  • Participate in swimmer recruitment and retention efforts when assigned
  • Attend team activities when assigned
  • Miscellaneous responsibilities as assigned
  • Act as a primary responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in the pool area and provides backup to lifeguard as needed in emergencies and crowd control
Qualifications
  • Education or personal experience specific to competitive swimming
  • Coaching experience with competitive swimming
  • Safety training for coaches and/or Lifeguard Certified (If you do not currently have must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training)
  • Adult, child and infant CPR, Community First Aid, Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens (If you do not currently have must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training)
  • Foundations of Coaching 101 (If you do not currently have must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training)
  • Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming (If you do not currently have must obtain within 30 days of hire or at first available training)
  • Must exhibit a stable temperament and a high degree of maturity.
  • Ability to communicate with people of all levels
  • Have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the Upper Palmetto YMCA
  • Walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (25 pounds), pushing, kneeling, standing and speaking
