Position Description: 

Under the supervision of the Director of College Counseling, the College Counselor will provide comprehensive, individualized college counseling services to all Brewster Academy students. The College Counselor must have excellent counseling, listening, organizational, and writing skills and have a thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of the college application process. including college list construction, essay review, interview preparation, curricular and standardized testing advising, and general admission strategy. 


Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Meet with seniors/pgs as needed to create and finalize college lists, review essays, proofread/edit applications, etc. 

  • Manage the college counseling process for approximately 50 seniors/pgs

  • Prepare and deliver grade-level college counseling curriculum to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and post graduates

  • Write approximately 40-50 highly personalized letters of recommendation for seniors and post graduates

  • Coordinate parts of the standardized test process, including PSAT, SAT, and ACT

  • Demonstrate a willingness to become a part of the senior/pg academic team and the broader Brewster community

  • Participate in all college counseling related programming throughout the year

  • Able to use Naviance to upload/submit college applications and supporting documents. 

  • Must be able to handle highly sensitive material with discretion. 

  • Engage in professional development opportunities such as visiting colleges and universities throughout the academic year and attending national and regional college admissions counseling conferences. 

  • Meet with college representatives (both on campus, virtually, and through professional development opportunities) to broaden understanding and develop collegial relationships. 

  • Willing and able to immerse yourself in a boarding school community with potential opportunities such as dorm parenting, coaching, committee work, etc.

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.





Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. 

  • 4-5 years of experience in college counseling, either at a college/university or at a high school. 

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills. 

  • Proficiency in Naviance and other technology.
