The Youth and Student Program Specialist collaborates with the Youth and Student Program Manager to build, strengthen and support Amnesty International USA’s Youth and Student Program. The Youth & Student Program provides young people with the opportunity to engage in human rights education, advocacy and organizing in their communities across the United States.

The Youth and Student Program Specialist is responsible for managing multiple youth member leader groups as well as implementing AIUSA’s strategy around youth leadership development. The Specialist builds and strengthens the capacity of specialized youth volunteer structures to lead and support activities that advance AIUSA’s human rights work; leads on recruitment, assessment and retention of youth leadership bodies; and develops training and support mechanisms for youth leaders. Further, they are responsible for leading the successful mobilization of youth and student activism initiatives at AIUSA.


Essential Job Functions

  • Manage and directs youth member leader groups including Student Activist Coordinators, Youth Collective, Youth Power Action Network, Social Media Managers, and Buzz Squad
  • Manage budget for respective youth leadership programs
  • Develop and implement standards of accountability to ensure that member leaders meet the expectations associated with their roles
  • Develop and implement Youth Leaders Alumni Network
  • Create onboarding plan for youth leadership bodies, including one-on-one meetings and customized support as needed, ensuring leaders are fully prepared for their role
  • Respond to member leader queries and needs for support
  • Develop and implement strategies for recruitment, assessment and retention of youth leadership bodies and youth and student activists
  • Coordinate organization-wide youth organizing initiatives, including National Week of Student Action
  • Develop and facilitate webinars, trainings and orientations for AIUSA youth leadership bodies and activists
  • Develop, implement and evaluate communication, retention and engagement strategies
  • Support individual member leaders through coaching, leadership development and skill development
  • Project manage and lead annual in-person and virtual trainings for youth leadership bodies to provide orientation and skill development
  • Develop strategy for ongoing skill development of member leaders and activists
  • Represent AIUSA with external partners, including work in coalitions and other outreach opportunities and other audiences

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years directly relevant experience with volunteer management, organizing, and/or program management; work on human rights or social justice preferred
  • Strong understanding of volunteer management, engagement and development, including experience with recruitment, coaching, assessment and removal of volunteers
  • Knowledge of best practices and current theories of youth leadership development and volunteer management
  • Ability to direct, motivate and collaborate with volunteers
  • Exercises commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility
  • Experience with youth leadership development at the high school and college-aged level or other experience working with youth
  • Ability to independently manage multiple concurrent projects to success
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement systems or processes for a team while integrating multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to manage and analyze data, and use data to make strategic decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to work across teams, departments and other structures to achieve goals
  • Experience developing training materials and facilitating workshops based on identified needs of stakeholder groups
  • Strong written communication ability, including experience with email, newsletters, toolkits, and/or promotional materials
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills, with demonstrated ability to independently resolve conflict
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and initiate creative solutions
