POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the President and CEO, plans and directs functions within the Development Department and serves as a senior executive and principal gift officer for the organization. Specific areas of responsibility include development, advancement services, and fundraising. The Vice President of Development works closely with the President in developing the organization’s fundraising strategies. As a member of the senior management team, the Vice President takes a leadership role in establishing institutional policies, practices, and strategic direction.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Vice President of Development oversees individual fundraising, private foundations, government grants, corporate giving, and special events and manages all fundraising professional staff related to each advancement function. In addition, the Vice President creates and manages the annual development budget. The Vice President oversees donor relations including recognition and stewardship for over 500 major donors. The Vice President oversees all advancement operations including the functions of gift processing, gift receipting, acknowledgments, data integrity, and report writing. The Vice President of Development directs prospect research and proposal writing.

 

The Vice President provides leadership in driving completion of the current capital campaign and any future campaigns. A significant responsibility includes building relationships with Board of Trustees, identifying and cultivating new donors, and promoting the mission of the Autry.

 

The Vice President of Development is responsible for carrying an active portfolio of 50-60 individuals capable of making 6-7 figure gifts and is responsible for providing leadership on all Trustee giving. The Vice President, working collaboratively with the membership and marketing and communications departments, provides direction and guidance on communications vehicles that are related to fundraising activities and messaging.

 

The Vice President of Development is responsible for creating and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies to generate current and future revenue from individuals, corporations, private foundations, and government grant sources. The Vice President provides leadership to spearhead and direct fundraising activities for major Autry projects, including both temporary and long-term installations and exhibitions, educational programs, art and artifact acquisition, naming of galleries, collections care, endowment, and capital improvements.
 

OTHER FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as assigned.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree in a related field is preferred.

 

A strong working knowledge of the Los Angeles area and its philanthropic community is required.

 

Minimum 10 years of proven and successful experience in creating and implementing development strategies. The ability to effectively communicate and articulate the organization’s mission to internal and external audiences is critical.

 

The successful candidate will have experience recruiting and supporting board committees and other committees relating to fundraising initiatives.

 

Proven Fundraising Experience – must have extensive hands-on experience driving capital campaigns and have a proven track record of closing 6+ figure gifts.

 

Management Skills – The ability to manage and lead a cohesive team that can deliver results is essential. A successful candidate must be an effective leader, excelling in managing, coaching, and motivating their own team, and will hold themselves and others to the highest standards. The Vice President will work with the Development Committee of the  Board of Trustees to develop fundraising goals based on a departmental strategic plan, forthcoming exhibitions, school and public programs, annual giving, and other projects.

 

Exceptional Planning and Implementation Skills – Must be a strategic thinker, analytical and intellectually aggressive. This person will establish a development plan and budget and must be skilled at allocating and fully leveraging resources. The Vice President of Development is resourceful and able to develop relationships to get results. They move others to action and end goals by planning, motivating, organizing, and monitoring the work of others. This person will supervise activities designed to increase awareness of the organization’s major and planned giving program. This individual will establish the development plan and budget

 

Leadership Qualities – The successful candidate will be collegial and use a highly collaborative approach to work, emphasizing integration across functions. They will have a positive attitude, able to inspire and earn respect through personal example and work ethic. This person will demonstrate a high level of personal accountability for the achievement of demanding objectives.

 

Communication Skills – Demonstrated effective and persuasive oral and written communication skills.

 

High Ethical Standards and Personal Qualities – The Vice President of Development is highly ethical. They project confidence, professionalism and high personal standards.

 

A working knowledge of Altru or similar fundraising software is highly desirable.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires use of computer, physical mobility, and stamina. Work is generally performed in an office setting. The position also involves long periods of standing, walking, or sitting and frequent stooping and bending. Extended work hours as needed.
