A Reporter at News 9 helps drive the Ideal Team Player culture.

Job Summary: As a Reporter you will gather, write, and perform on-air presentation of stories. Provide direction to technical crew. Write news copy and travel to news scene to cover stories as needed. Maintain awareness of current events.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assure accuracy and clarity of information. Maintain professional/personal appearance, react quickly and appropriately on camera. Maintain proper voice and diction.
  • Gather, write, produce, and perform on-air presentation of stories.
  • Check news beats and communicate with contacts on a daily basis. Initiate new sources. Pursue follow-ups on ongoing stories. Suggest new story ideas and angles, and innovative ways to package a story.
  • Post to social media accounts at least three times per day. Send pictures and/or text updates on stories to web producers at least twice a day.
  • Organize material in preparation for story assignments. Retrieve statistical information, maintain awareness of current events. Attend and contribute to editorial meetings.
  • Provide direction to photographers and engineers on assignment. Provide direction and assistance to editors in packaging the story.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned, including driving automobile for company business.

Job Schedule: This is a Full-Time position work rotating shifts and 24 hours on call availability. Must be able to work extended schedules. Travel without advance notice possible.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Formal education equivalent of BS degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field. Related experience will be evaluated by Company management and may be substituted on the basis of two years of experience equals one year of education.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in a television newsroom as an on-air reporter preferred. Tape required.
  • Knowledge of journalistic standards.
  • Ability to react appropriately on camera.
  • Accurate and comprehensive writing skills as well as good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and ability to learn new systems.
  • Link of work sample required.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and have a driving record acceptable to the company.
  • Capable of handling the physical and mental requirements including:
    • ability to verbally communicate in English
    • ability to read computer monitor information (words and data)
    • ability to hear detailed spoken word
    • ability to remain sedentary and to travel to work location
    • ability to perform manual dexterity tasks with hands, fingers
    • ability to analyze data, concentrate, reason, and write
    • ability to perform under emotional stress
    • ability to work rotating shifts and be on 24-hour call
