The Aviation Intern will assist the Aviation Department, under the direction of the Manager, Aviation, develop a Safety Management System (SMS) for aviation. In addition, this position will work with Quality and Safety to integrate the Aviation Department into the MTN Emergency Response Plan. This position will work approximately 30 hours per week. 



1. Research SMS Management tools that may be suitable for the department.

2. Perform a GAP analysis of existing safety program.

3. Identify hazards and perform a risk assessment with assistance from the department.

4. Develop hazard reporting tools, if needed.

5. Create goals and objectives for safety.

6. Identify training goals for aviation department. 

7. Develop a draft SMS that encompasses all 4 components of SMS (Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion).

8. Work with the Quality and Safety Department to integrate Aviation into the company Emergency Response Plan. 




1. College student pursuing or have recently completed a degree program in Aviation/Aerospace Safety or have a concentration in Aviation Safety, required. Students pursuing a Master's degree, preferred.

2. Training in SMS development and Emergency Management along with a background in Aviation, preferred.

3. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy.  Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines.  Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.

4. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.

5. Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and office equipment.

6. Ability to speak and communicate clearly in order to accurately convey information in person or by phone.

7. OSHA Category III – No exposure to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties.
