Position Summary:

Backcountry Access (BCA) is a market leader in avalanche safety equipment. The engineering & development team is specifically responsible for the development of new lifesaving products and technologies that snow recreationalists and professionals all over the world use to stay safe in avalanche terrain. The team is looking for a hardware engineer to help drive the electronics development process for BCA's Avalanche Transceivers (beacons). This role will be based in Boulder, CO.


  • Develop & test hardware for class leading avalanche transceivers (beacons)

  • Demonstrate ownership of a given hardware platform, and ability to become a subject matter expert

  • Collaborate with verification and validation teams to ensure full test coverage and debug as necessary

  • Identify and manage risks throughout the design process, communicating them and developing mitigation strategies.

  • Work closely with development leads and other engineers to gather requirements, prioritize development & deliver business value.

  • Document & communicate results with cross-functional team.

  • Support legacy products and production support as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

  • 3-5 years of experience in electronics hardware design

  • Experience leading hardware design from inception to completion

  • Adept with PCB layout, fabrication, and assembly processes

  • Proficient with PCB CAD programs (preferably Altium)

  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and firmware using lab test equipment

  • Competent in the usage of oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer and other lab equipment

  • Competent in soldering / hands-on debugging

  • High level documentation skills to current best practices

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in mixed signal PCB design

  • Experience with RF circuit design & layout

  • Experience with microcontroller based data acquisition and processing

  • Knowledge of avalanche transceivers and their basic operation

  • Active Skier / Snowboarder / Snowmobiler

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit in front of computer for long periods of time
  • Ability perform repetitive fine motor skilled tasks
  • May be required to lift 15-50 pounds occasionally
