Position Title: Animal Keeper/Trainer

Department: Animal

Accountable To: Animal Department Supervisor FLSA: Non-exempt

Primary Objective of Position:

The animal keeper is responsible for the care and daily husbandry for the animal species in their assigned areas. This position usually works independently of others and is responsible for a good base knowledge of a majority of the animals in the collection. The animal keeper position is responsible for both daily husbandry of the animals in their assigned area, but also the education and interpretation of the animals for the public.

Essential Functions

  1. Responsibilities include overseeing the daily animal husbandry, feeding, cleaning, animal enclosures, maintenance of animal enclosures, ordering supplies for the department and record keeping for the animal department.
  2. Other responsibilities include the daily maintenance of animal enclosures which may require repairing and replacing materials in these enclosures.

Supportive Functions/Teamwork Skills:

  1. The Animal Keeper will serve Jungle Island in any capacity required to support the highest guest standards and animal care standards.
  2. The Animal Keeper will represent the Jungle Island on relevant community and professional organizations/committees.
  3. Completes other duties as assigned.

Safety and Security:

  • The Animal Keeper position is responsible for adhering to all company policies which include, but not limited to, animal escape procedure and inclement weather protocols.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • The Animal Keeper needs to have a general understanding of tools and equipment used for the animal department.

Physical Demands

  • This position requires long hours of standing, walking, bending, and squatting.
  • It is a must that this person is physically able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds or more.
  • This position may require you to work in adverse weather conditions like rain, cold and the summer heat




Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED).

Experience: Two (2) years of previous related experience.


  • A college degree in any of the biological sciences or psychology is preferred. Applicants may substitute the equivalent in experience working with exotic animals where applicable.
  • Knowledge of animal handling and husbandry practices is required.
  • Experience in behavior modification using operant conditioning via positive reinforcement is a bonus.
  • It is necessary that an applicants combined education and experience clearly demonstrate the knowledge and skills outlined.
  • The ability to produce a valid Florida driver license may be required.


  • Familiar with natural histories of a wide range of species
  • Great interpersonal/customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and conduct themselves positively and professionally in all aspects of the job
  • Experience in the care, feeding, training and safe handling of a variety of exotic animals
  • Follows directions
  • Keep electronic health and behavioral records as required
  • Able to communicate and work effectively with others
  • Be prompt
  • Provide world-class guest experiences
  • Monitor animal behavior and appearance and communicate any abnormalities effectively
  • Operate motorized equipment and vehicles
  • Be an ambassador for Jungle Island inside and outside of the park
  • Capable of lifting 50lbs standing, bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching; can work on uneven terrain and move around on slippery surfaces
  • Can handle frequent exposure to predictable and controllable hazards associated with close contact with a wide variety of animals (including large animals, birds, and reptiles); dust, and allergens; handle hazardous materials; work in cramped or confined spaces
  • Must be able to work outside, in water, and in all weather conditions
