The Clinical Support System for Serious Mental Illness (CSS-SMI), known as SMI Adviser, is a 5-year initiative funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and housed at the American Psychiatric Association. SMI Adviser ( offers training activities, on-demand consultation, and vetted resources to support delivery of evidence-based practices by frontline clinicians caring for those with serious mental illness (SMI), including major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. This is a high-profile initiative, with a national reach, requiring responsiveness to the funder and to other key stakeholders in order to meet the vision of the initiative.

The Analyst reports to the Director of SMI Adviser and serves as a key technical member of SMI Adviser grant, leading all data analyses and data visualization needs of the initiative. The Data Analyst designs, builds, and maintains business intelligence reporting solutions which aggregate online user data from, but not limited to, Salesforce, Google Analytics, and APAs Learning Management System to create near real-time data reports and visualizations which describe user activities across the grants website. The Data Analyst makes data sets useful and meaningful by presenting key information in a variety of ways for a number of end users (initiative staff; funders; partner organizations). Responsibilities include requirements gathering, design, website+app development from the perspective of data collection, deployment and maintenance of business intelligence (BI) solutions and preparing tables + figures for reports and presentations.



  • Work with the Director to understand current business performance, identify areas that need further investigation, and provide deep analysis of the initiatives performance.
  • Design executive level reports that provide regular and meaningful data to grant partners, funder leadership, and other partnering organizations.
  • Own analytics projects end to end by defining deliverables and timelines with stakeholders, and identifying the needed resources and data to make it happen.
  • Clearly present actionable insights resulting from analytics projects.
  • Facilitate and participate in roadmap planning sessions to evaluate and prioritize analytic development.
  • Maintain PowerBI dashboard of key grant metrics which summarizes data via interactive tables and visualizations.
    • Design, code, test, and document BI/Reporting systems, applications, and programs.
    • Coordinate with APAs IT department to develop the semantic layer, metadata, reports, and report definitions.
  • Extract insights from data for stakeholder reporting.
    • Develop Data Analysis Summaries for reports and presentations. (Methods, benefits, problems)
    • Develop and deploy reports, dashboards and other output from BI and transactional systems.
    • Prepare analog data tables and graphs for inclusion in stakeholder reports and presentations.
  • Publish key data visualizations and explanatory descriptions to project websites.

  • Bachelors or masters degree in information technology, business analytics, health informatics, statistics or related field.
  • Prior related work experience a plus.
  • Strong SQL programming skills, and of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Ability to think strategically, analyze, and interpret information derived from data.
  • Required experience in performing ETL on datasets of all shapes and sizes.
  • Required experience with CRM platforms (Salesforce)
  • Required experience with cloud-based data collection platforms (Google Analytics, BigQuery).
  • Required experience with querying web data sources using APIs.
  • Required experience in building front-end BI reports using data exploration and data visualization tools (Power BI).
  • Experience in/Willingness to learn working with cloud-based data storage.
  • Basic understanding of HTML, PHP, and logic-based programming (.NET, JAVA, C#, etc.).
  • Full project management and development life cycle experience, including experience with data processing flowcharting techniques.
  • Good knowledge of applicable data privacy laws & data governance practices.
  • Ability to work with others as a team, as well as by themselves.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
