Overnight Camp Counselor



Come and experience the amazing natural wonder of Camp Watia! The Camp Counselor will be responsible for the supervision, programming, and safety of campers assigned to his/her group and/or cabin. The Camp Counselor make everyone feel welcome at Camp Watia. The Camp Counselor is responsible for making the Camp Watia experience special for every child, parent, and participant. The Camp Counselor must be willing to live in a resident camp setting for the duration of the camp season.

  • Able to follow ACA standards for all aspects of camp.
  • Ensuring the safety and engagement of all children that are assigned to his/her group and cabin.
  • Follows program lesson plans and implementation plan in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of all participants.
  • Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches to the academic, social and emotional development of youth.
  • Facilitates a challenge by choice program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
  • Maintains on-going communication with supervisor and other counselors.
  • Communicates appropriately with all parent interactions.
  • Adheres to all required policies of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the state, and federal regulations.


  • Must be a graduating senior or 18+, which ever comes first.
  • Experience working with youth ranging from ages 7 to 17 is preferred.
  • Ability to constantly and quickly move to various locations in and around the entire camp.
  • Physically perform all CPR and First Aid skills and/or assist as needed in emergency situations
  • Experience in creating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment, and arts.
  • Must possess oral, auditory, and written communication skills that are appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Flexibility with the ability to adapt to last minute schedule changes and other potential circumstances.
  • Ability to stand for extended period of time.
  • Bend or stoop to reach various height levels.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50lbs and transport equipment and supplies from one location to another
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity.
  • Ability to hear distress signals even when distracted by noise or activity.
