JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Camp Director/Youth Specialist is a member of the Camp Administration Team and is also responsible for the planning and implementation of Girl Scout programs in outdoor settings and for the safeguarding of campers' health, safety, and security. This individual will handle societal issues concerning bullying, anger management, suicide, LGBTQ identity, mutilation and proper social interactions to name a few. This position provides prevention and intervention consultation to the GSNETX Leadership team and designated staff on matters concerning mental health and behavioral concerns of girl participants at camp.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list may not include all of the duties assigned):

Administrative Duties:
•Responsible for compliance with ACA standards, Texas Department of State Health, GSUSA Policies, and operational procedures, regulations and standards.
•Collaborates with Camp Director and Administration Team to address the administration and coordination of all camp operations, as delegated.
•Responsible for all Camp Director responsibilities in the event of absence of the Camp Director.
•Serves as and is responsible for being a role model for campers in behavior and attitude while following the Girl Scout Promise and Law and camp procedures.
•Assists in the supervision of all camp staff.
•Assists with camper check-in and check-out processes.
•Helps prepare badge sheets, camper envelopes, and other information sent home with each camper.
•Assists with bus loading and unloading.
•Works to ensure that all campers have a good camping experience, as evidenced by camper and parent evaluations.
•Coordinates the camper evaluation process; collects evaluations from Unit Leaders, reviews all evaluations, and follows-up on any camper concerns or counselor concerns about campers.
•Attends all meals and serves as hostess at camper tables, as needed.
•Attends all gathering times of campers and assists the coordination of activities.
•Attends opening camp fire and closing camp fire and assists with camp-wide announcements and camp-wide programs.

Youth Specialist Duties:
•Serves as crisis prevention and intervention consultant to the Senior Leadership Team and designated management team members.
•Trains camp/program staff in and provides camp management techniques and tools for prevention and intervention in areas of bullying, anger management, suicide, LGBTQ issues, mutilation and proper social interactions for low crisis levels.
•Communicates with camp management on mental health and behavior issues and determines level of crisis: low, medium or high.
•Assess the camp participant to determine level of prevention or intervention, as needed.
•Provides recommendations for course of action to be taken.
•Communicates with parent or guardian regarding his/her child.
•Collaborates with camp staff to determine follow-up steps to communicate to other campers and staff post incident.
•Implementation of prevention, intervention and follow-up plans.
•On call 24/7 during camp season.
•Documents all consultations.

OTHER

•Must have reliable transportation, hold a valid drivers’ license and meet GSNETX driving record & automobile insurance requirements
•Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS—Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s):

•Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, child development or related field, Master’s preferred.
•At least 1 year, or two prior seasons, of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp or school setting.
•Ability to make quick and accurate assessments of mental or behavioral conditions.
•Ability to excise balanced judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent and equitable manner.
•High level of comfort speaking to diverse audiences: girls, parents and Senior Leadership.
•Experienced at conflict resolution.
•Interprets social resources to staff as needed or required.
•Maintains absolute confidentiality of council records including, but not limited to, payroll, personnel, camper care, business plans, and financial information.
•Maintains absolute confidentiality of patient's records.
•Maintains certifications and continuing education as required.
•Experience or ability to obtain knowledge of ACA core competencies and standards.
•Current CPR and First Aid certifications prior to first day of camper arrival and knowledge of emergency procedures.
•Knowledge of and ability to work with adults and children ages 5 and above.
•Knowledge and understanding of philosophy and program of Girl Scouting or willingness to learn about Girl Scouting.
•Must hold membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
•Flexible and creative in carrying out responsibilities.
•Ability to plan, analyze, and evaluate data.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Ability to function as part of a team.
•Ability to adapt to group living situations.

The employee must be able to drive and have a valid driver’s license. The employee must be able to lift or move 50 pounds or perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Activities occur both inside and outside and employee is subject to both environmental conditions; however, employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
State license or registration to meet the requirements of a qualified mental health professional
CPR and First Aid, required.
