Our Mission

The Windward School is one of the best independent, coeducational day schools in the country dedicated to providing an excellent instructional program for children with language-based learning disabilities. We serve over 900 students between our Westchester and New York City campuses.  The multisensory curriculum is designed for students of average to superior intelligence who can benefit from the unique educational experience provided.  Through direct instruction in small class settings, a trained staff assists students to improve their language skills.  Academic success, combined with opportunities for social and emotional growth, enables students to understand their learning styles, build confidence, and develop self-advocacy skills. The Windward School, a premier LD school is seeking an instructional leader to support and lead our Manhattan campus which houses two divisions.  The Head of the Manhattan campus is responsible for overseeing all activities involving students, teachers, and parents in the division.  They will work in close collaboration with faculty, staff, parents, other division heads, and members of the administrative team. The Head of the Manhattan Campus reports directly to the Associate Head of School.

Duties of the Head of Manhattan Campus 

  • Advances the mission, vision, and values of the Windward Community

  • Leads the Manhattan Campus, responsible for its daytoday operation; direct and support the activities of the School faculty and staff in their duties and teaching 
  • Articulates the programs, philosophy, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed consistent with their individual roles
  • Provides an orderly environment in which learning can take place; fosters a school climate that is supportive and generates a positive morale
  • Actively contributing and supporting the DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging) initiatives of The School
  • Maintains awareness of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of our students, and collaborate with the Associate Head and the Assistant Division Head to develop plans for meeting those needs
  • Informs and collaborates with the Head of School and Associate Head of School on issues and opportunities within the program and activities
  • Directs and assists in the planning and presentation of school assemblies and programs; assists in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events; keeps entire school community informed of various school programs and activities
  • Works with faculty and the Associate Head of School and the academic team to support and retain students and families
  • Coordinators a master class schedule in conjunction with the divisional leaders on all Windward campuses and assigns teachers to classes and other responsibilities
  • Serves as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school policies and procedures
  • Serves on various hiring committees; interviewing candidates and providing recommendations and feedback for hiring
  • Observes, supervises, and evaluates the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervises the teaching process; reviews, evaluates, and develops academic programs in collaboration with the Director of Language Arts.
  • Supports students, staff, and parents in the orientation and connection to our community and program
  • Provides guidance and oversees the grading and reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement
  • Works with the Assistant Division Heads to determine, communicate, and uphold the student code of conduct; maintains student discipline consistent with school policies
  • Maintains timely and relevant communication to parents and facilitates faculty communication with parents 
  • Collaborates with all administrators as a member of the CIAC (Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Committee), the Academic Team and the Senior Leadership team 
  • Provides guidance and resources in scheduled meetings with curriculum coordinators, divisional administrative team, admissions & outplacement as well as parent/teacher conferences
  • Ensures compliance with the legal requirements and maintains the educational standards established by the State of New York and NYSAIS 
  • Develops, analyzes and monitors divisional budget as well as review departmental budget decisions
  • Performs other duties as assigned 
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant teaching and administrative experience preferably in an independent school
  • Master’s degree in a related field of study
  • Proven record of success as a teacher and instructional leader
  • Commitment to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging) work and creating an inclusive environment
  • Technologically proficient
